ReviewsPerfect for the Stage AND the Studio!!
by D.J. from Monterey, TN USA
I very rarely buy a piece of gear that will only do one thing, as I just don't normally have the funds to justify that. In this case, however, I made an exception, as I was struggling with getting a ... read more [+]good "doubling" effect on my vocals on our recorded material using some of the top plug-ins. They either introduced too much delay or just sounded off; not like the polished doubled vocals you hear on many of today's top hits on the radio. Even after upgrading to ProTools HD in an effort to eliminate the plug-in delay issue, I still was not happy with what the plug-ins did to my vocals sonically, spatially, and tonally. I decided to take the plunge and once again venture into the world that is TC Helicon vocal processing. I had been down this road before, having owned two TC Helicon vocal processors, only to sell them some time later after many months of frustration with programming difficulties, TC's famously inept manuals, and the general need to be part rocket scientist to operate TC Helicon gear. All that being said, I could never argue with TC's superior algorithms and sound. They have always been the highest quality-sounding processors on the planet (if you could just figure out how to program the darned things!), so I decided to give them one more shot at doing ONE SIMPLE JOB for me. They couldn't possibly screw that up, could they? Well, they didn't. They got it right, and hit the ball out of the park with this piece, and let me tell you a coulple of reasons why.April 2, 2010 Music Background: Vocalist, Live Sound Engineer, Recording Engineer, Guitar Hobbyist First, the manual is MUCH easier to understand and covers the basic functions much more clearly. It appears as though someone who actually speaks English actually had a hand in writing this one. Check their website, though, because there are two VERY IMPORTANT manual addendums that you need and can download for free on Tchelicon.com. Secondly, the knobs on the face of the device control important parameters on each preset WITHOUT having to navigate submenu after submenu. No more trying to remember how many layers deep into the menu you were when you made that last adjustment, as most can be made in the first or second level. Third, it gives you S/PDIF digital ins and outs. This works perfectly in my ProTools HD set-up, as I simply use one each of my digital ins and outs on my 192i/o to get into and out of the VoiceDoubler (I have to convert AES to S/PDIF and back, but it works fine with a Hosa converter). The voice doubler also uses this digital connection to accept a clock signal from the host clock (in my case, a Big Ben that is clocking the 192i/o, that in turn clocks the VoiceDoubler), so no clicks and pops caused by innaccurate clocking when operating in the digital world. Fourth (and this is the most important!), the sounds are amazing! Many of the presets do not need to be touched and give you that sound heard on so many records these days. I am not going to write an entire paragraph on the sounds, but please check out TC Helicon's website where you can hear actual vocal demos of some of the presets. I know this piece is marketed more as a live piece to give you that "studio" sound while on stage, and it will do that in spades. I can tell you that it is good enough to use on your vocal tracks recorded in the studio as well, as I have done it. Big time engineers and producers with big time budgets will still get the doubled vocals the old fashioned way, and they get paid very handsomely for that special skill. For less experienced (and less compensated!) studio owners and engineers like myself, this piece gets me so close that I daresay only seasoned professionals who do this for a living will be able to tell my doubling came from a single processor. You friends, clients, and radio listeners won't. Look at it this way: buy this piece for its current price, or pay a seasoned studio and recording/mixing engineer literally thousands of dollars to record/edit/remix your vocals for you. If money is no object, then I always default to real, experienced studio talent. If your budget is more beer than champagne like mine, however, buy this piece. You simply can't go wrong. close [-] |
