As said, you get what you pay for.

Hi,
I myself own the guitar too, and I like it a lot. These guitar does not sound digital at all. The semi-hollow body guitars and jazz guitars sound almost like the real thing. The only thing ... read more [+]that sets them apart from the real thing is that the variax300 guitar sound does not get sustained for a long time whereas the hollow body guitars do. This guitar is amazing though! It has all the guitar sounds you really will ever need, especially for GIGS. I use a lot the Telecaster guitar sounds, they sound great, clean or with distortion, they really have a sweet tone!
What is kind of iffy on the guitar is the acoustic guitars. For live performances it is great! But if you plan to buy this guitar and use the acoustic guitar function, for recording, I got to say it doesnt sound very powerful or inspiring for recording. That is the real reason I rate the guitar a 4.5, because I bought it thinking that the acoustic guitar function was going to sound SWELL recorded, but I was disapointed with that. But after sometime I actually liked this guitar because the eletrical guitars sound great even recorded, and the audience stay amaze hearing the guitar sounds live on either acoustic or electric!.
Also when the strings rip, the string must be replaced very careful, because the PIEZO gets messed up very easily. That happened to me on the first time when I bought this Guitar, but I called the LINE6 company and I got it fixed. I got told to replace the string careful that way i can prevent this from happening again, and the guitar has lasted me now for about seven months now since then, and it is doing GOOD! So if you are buying this guitar you must be careful with the piezo, because this guitar deeply depends on that part in order for its sound to be producing. Just Replace the strings carefully!
I repeated this for a reason!

For the price this guitar is great for LIVE GIG PERFORMANCE, just as long as you give it the proper care!

If you are rich and going for a big company like WEA, Sony, RCA, or those other big companies, then you should really be looking at buying a lot of GUITARS, instead of buying 25 guitars in one. That way you are not complaining of the minor details of this guitar. close [-]

Not the complete picture

I have done loads of research on this product and read all the reviews before buying this guitar. I have also been playing since 1979 so I am a anal-rententive person; just can't spell. My set up incl... read more [+]udes 2 5150 half stacks and for smaller shows 2 tech21 Tradmark60's so as you can see I am very into my overall sounds. I was thinking about trading in my amps a year or so ago to something more modern when I looked into the PODXT Live. This thing is a great investment. So back to my story I have many guitars, and wish I still had some that I sold in the past. I recently purchased the Var300 (Red) because of research I have done and actually playing the guitar. So what does it do for me, well with the VAR Patches in the PodXT Live this guitar rocks beyond my wildest dreams. It is totally unbelieveable, that said the regular patches in the XTLive sound like crap. But if I plug in my Ibanez's, my Gibson Les Paul Studio, Gibson SG, those patchs rock. So I guess whatI am trying to say is if you have a pod XTLive then you will really be happy (or their Vetta Amp) because they were really made for each other. I really do not care for the Var 300 without the Pod. But with the PodXT this guitar is a very nice addition. I purchased the Var 300 to be a secondary guitar for specfic songs that require going from a electric to a acoustic. The Sitar is a very nice sound as is some versions of the acoustics close [-]

Definitely worth considering

Music Background:
I have spent quite some time with the Variax 300. It does not have the finesse of the 500, 600 or 700 but you get what you pay for. The guitar modelling is very convincing and any guitar aficionado ... read more [+]will be impressed by the accuracy of the modelled sounds. The nuances of the various guitar models would be wasted on shred heads so shredders may not be interested in the Variax.

The Variax sounds can be customised and stored in the guitar using the Workbench software and interface. This detail has been ommited by many reviewers unaware of this feature. When you consider the possible customisable combinations of body styles, pickup types, pickup location/orientation, volume & tone values, 6 or 12 strings and customisable tunings - you can build "virtually" thousands of guitars and store them on your computer to be uploaded to the guitar as required.

The 300 has the same modelling capabilities of the higher end Variax models but has a flatter neck radius (a plus for some players) and the body is made of agathis rather than basswood (500 & 600) or mahogany (700). It doesn't come with the A/B (unbalanced 1/4 inch / balanced XLR) footswitch but if you are playing through a Vetta II or PodXT Live you won't really need it (but would be nice to DI acoustic models to the PA). You could always buy the A/B footswitch separately if you need it.

Bang for buck, you can't go past the Variax 300. Experienced players will want to spend some time improving the setup of the guitar (or get someone to set it for you). I would strongly recommend the Variax to any new guitarist looking to purchase their first "serious" guitar. Rather than wondering whether to buy an accoustic or an electric, 6 string or 12, humbuckers or single coil pickups - you can have all of these in one guitar. Getting a PodXT Live with it solves all the decisions about amplifiers too.

I have been playing for more than 25 years and am very picky about tone (tube amp nut). My favourite guitar is my American Delux Strat. When it comes to gigging, I would love to take the Strat, a Les Paul, a 6 string acoustic and 12 string acoustic with me (I didn't because it just wasn't practical). Now I take my Variax 300 (set up nicely) and have all these guitars and more (sitar & banjo) with me. None of the punters at the gigs have complained about my guitar sounding digital (one - because it doesn't and two - they wouldn't notice anyway).

Do yourself a favour, check it out!

P.S. The 12 string Rickenbacker model on the Variax through the Vox AC30 amp model on the Pod is to die for. close [-]

This guitar needs viagra. Sad that I have to be the one to give an honest opinion ( and the only one )but this guitar reminds me of the one I got from Aldens back in 1964. All the hype associated wi... read more [+]th it is far from reality. It was not setup and the packaging was beatup inside. The sounds are digital and weak. Stick to real pickups and a guitar line that has a history. Not a happy camper. close [-]
