Why the Performance Set?
Using their academic musical training and experience, founder Herb Tucmandl and his team of producers analyzed and deconstructed the orchestral performance into a myriad of atomic particles, if you will, while planning the production of the library. They realized early on that recreating an authentic orchestral performance not only required flawless multisamples, but also unhindered access to hundreds of articulated nuances, the subtle bits that are the earmarks of human expression. While great multisamples can be very convincing, these Performance Elements add the final touch of realism to achieve an authenticity unheard of until now.

Some confuse our Performance Elements with simple Phrases which are commonly used in traditional sample libraries to mimic real performances. While phrases were recorded for the Vienna Symphonic Library to create the Performance Elements, the elements on the final product are very different from the inflexible, fixed recordings of other libraries. Here, we offer small addressable samples, or phrase-slices, that can be accessed individually with the help of our Performance Tool. The user is not locked in to the compositional ideas of the sample library producer by having to use long, immovable recordings. The Performance Set affords all the flexibility of multisamples combined with the realism of phrases - a magnificent breakthrough for sampling!

How exactly does one access and use these Performance Elements? Since many of these elements occur between notes, or after a note, it's often impossible to use them conventionally by triggering a keyboard. So intelligent software had to be developed to analyze the user's keyboard performance in real-time and automatically trigger the proper nuance at the right time to complete the passage. The innovative Legato Mode, Repetition Mode, and Articulation Mode that are provided in the Performance Tool are the first examples of this astounding "smart-play" capability, and there are many more to come.

What is the Pro Edition?
This is the second, most complete release to date of the Vienna Symphonic Library. The initial release was the smaller First Edition, which was intended to be discontinued upon release of the Pro Edition, but now continues to be offered as the more affordable entry-level option for customers wanting to benefit from the Vienna Symphonic Library.


Contents of the Performance Set, Pro Edition

• Legato Performances: Up to 3 dynamic layers, with and without vibrato, with and without slides (strings only). Also includes legatos for strings con sordino and portamento legato on other strings.
  
• Repetition Performances: 5 and 9 repeated notes in different tempos, velocities, dynamics and playing techniques, e.g., legato, portato, staccato.
  
• Repetition performances for strings con sordino (legato, portato, staccato)
  
• Bowed vibrato repetitions with different velocities and dynamics
  
• Fast staccato repetitions with constant and progressive dynamics
  
• Octave runs in major, minor and chromatic scales, up- and downwards (spiccato and legato for strings)
  
• Grace notes (appoggiaturas): half and whole tones, up and down (up to the octave for woodwinds)
  
• Solo violin: Legato, detach and spiccato performances
  
• Tremolo performances in different intervals
  
• Glissando performances for strings, clarinet, horns, trombones
  
• Upbeats in different velocities and tempos for brass
