From Our Research Team:Tripping the UltraLite Fantastic! The MOTU UltraLite is a half-rackspace, bus-powered FireWire audio interface that turns a laptop or desktop Power Mac, Intel Mac or PC into a mobile 24-bit/96kHz recording studio with 10 inputs and 14 outputs. With a compact, half-rack form factor, the UltraLite delivers the same innovative design, proven reliability and award-winning sound as MOTU's other high-end FireWire audio interfaces. By packaging a pristine 24-bit/96kHz audio interface into a package roughly the size of an average hardback book, MOTU's got a winner in the UltraLite!MOTU UltraLite FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface at a Glance:
Rugged mobile interface with two mic preamps Housed in sturdy yet lightweight aluminum alloy, the UltraLite provides two mic/instrument inputs with preamps, 48-volt phantom power, unique 3-way pad switch (-36, -18 and 0dB) and front-panel Digital Precision Trim knobs that provide 24dB of gain in 1dB increments for a total gain range of 60dB. Eight analog ins and 10 TRS outs The MOTU UltraLite offers plenty of additional analog I/O via six balanced line-level 1/4" (TRS) inputs (a total of eight analog ins) and 10 analog TRS outputs. Also included are 96kHz stereo S/PDIF digital I/O, a dedicated stereo headphone output, and MIDI I/O for a controller keyboard and other gear. MIDI performance is sample-accurate with supporting software. Built-in 8-bus mixer allows versatile monitoring options You can connect microphones, guitars, synths, keyboards, drum machines and even effects processors, and then use the UltraLite's built-in 8-bus mixer to monitor all of these live inputs via the UltraLite's main outs, headphone jack or any other output - with virtually no monitoring latency and no processor drain on the computer. You can even create up to four separate (stereo) monitor mixes for the main outs, headphones and other outputs. Easy configuration with MOTU's CueMix Console Everything on the UltraLite, including talk-back and listen-back, can be controlled from the included CueMix Console software, just like a conventional mixer. When using the UltraLite to mix without a computer, you can control CueMix directly from the UltraLite's front-panel. When you finish front-panel programming, the backlit LCD displays 8-segment level meters for all inputs and outputs simultaneously, providing instant and continuous feedback, even in low light environments. Bus-powered and expandable via FireWire The UltraLite can draw power directly from its FireWire bus connection to the computer (no AC required) or from the included DC power supply when operating as a stand-alone mixer. You can easily expand your system by connecting additional UltraLite, Traveler, 828 or 896 FireWire audio interfaces. The UltraLite provides two FireWire A (400Mbit) ports for easy and convenient daisy-chaining. Syncs to SMPTE time code The MOTU UltraLite also provides on-board SMPTE time code synchronization features, which allow you to slave your UltraLite system to SMPTE time code (via any analog input) without a synchronizer. The UltraLite can also generate time code and send it to any analog output. These sync features are provided by a DSP-driven phase-lock engine with sophisticated filtering that provides fast lockup times and sub-frame accuracy. Like CueMix DSP, the synchronization features are cross-platform and compatible with all audio sequencer software that supports the ASIO2 sample-accurate sync protocol. Works with Macs (including Intel Macs) and PCs The UltraLite provides cross-platform compatibility with Mac OS X 10.3 or higher (including the new Intel Macs), Windows XP and any audio software that supports standard WDM/ASIO/Core Audio drivers. The included AudioDesk workstation software for Macintosh provides 24-bit recording/editing and 32-bit mixing/processing/mastering. MOTU UltraLite FireWire Audio/MIDI Interface Features:

Bought this today and recorded 4 vocals thus far...couldnt' be happier. I switched over from an M Audio 410 that was ailing. First of all, I plugged it straight into my Macbook, installed the CD, o... read more [+]pened Logic and it worked instantly. Started singing and could not believe the presence...truly brought my Studio Project C1 to life. Extremely quiet preamps. Also the build of the thing is quite nice and looks like a solid piece of professional gear...not a toy. The LCD is very helpful and more impressive and useful than I anticipated. Everything is just right. And....it fits in my laptop case...can't beat it!!! close [-]

I have had the unit for about 2 weeks and love what I see/hear so far. The converters seem to be much cleaner than my previous interface (TC Electronic Konnekt 24). Inputs are clean and the preamps sound sufficient for this price range. Excellent work MOTU! close [-]

by BOBBY from North Cali
The MOTU Ultralite is far superior to its competitors such as the Focusrite Saffire even though the Saffire shouldn't even be lumped into the same category considering it lacks comparible I/O in so ma... read more [+]ny ways. Reason I bring up the Saffire is becuase I purchased this interface first and was highly disapointed. June 12, 2007 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Producer, Hobbyist, Recording Arts Major. The build quality was poor, there was really no I/O for what u pay, and on top of all that the size of the dam thing was a laugh! Considering how large that thing was it should have been housing 2x the I/O that my ultralite has but no go. The utralite is great becuase it fits compact into my laptop bag along with my macbook and my cables and then I just lug the rest of my **** around such as my MPC and other cables, mics etc, in my MPC bag and im off! The LCD screen of the ultralite is great and very useful. I like the sturdiness of the product as well and how the pots are stepped to increment in very small resolutions. I could ramble forever about this product - but I will end saying this: The ultralite is an incredible interface and has very good sonic quality. Its a little pricier than some of its competitors in the same price point but I guarantee its worth it. close [-] A Great Portable Solution
by David Spencer from Atlanta, GA
My system consists of the UltraLite with a MacBook Pro (OS X 10.4.7) and Logic Pro. After much deliberation (and helpful consultation from Charlie here at Sweetwater), I chose the UltraLite for the ea... read more [+]se of use, and the portability. I use my rig for all sorts of tasks, from creating audio for interactive projects to music production, and it never lets me down. Everything was completely plug-and-play. And I can fit it all into my laptop backpack case and I'm mobile. The only reason I didn't go 5 stars is the fact that the physical interface is cramped. The knobs are small and close together. I've actually slipped a short length of vinyl tubing over the phones volume knob, to extend it and make it easier to use (the headphone jack is directly underneath, and a cable inserted there crowds the knob). The trade-off for portability. But you get used to it, and it's built like a tank, which makes me comfortable lugging it around. If you're looking for an interface for a laptop studio, I recommend checking out the UltraLite. close [-]
