The UAD Plug-In's Are Awesome!
by Mel Myers from Oklahoma, September 2008
Music Background: Jingle and Song Writer, Voice-Over Artist
My projects have taken a huge leap forward since installing the UAD-1 system. The plug-in's emulate the sound characteristics of venerable studio gear that I simply cannot afford right now, AND they provide multiple instances! For example, I just found an original Fairchild 670 online for $28,000. I'm sure it's worth it. The Fairchild 670 has proven itself time-and-time again on some of the most famous recordings of the last several decades. On a single UAD-1 card, I can run 12 mono or 6 stereo Fairchild 670 emulations at once. That's $168,000 worth of Fairchild 670's! I haven't used a UAD 1 plug-in that I didn't like. The last one I purchased was the Plate 140 reverb. I'm sorry I waited. It sounds fabulous on anything I run through it. The UAD system has given me a low-cost way to utilize big-time professional audio tools that help put my recordings on a par with the best studios in the world.
Excellent!

The flexi pak is the best value out there for DSP plug-ins.The second generation RTAS adapter works flawlessly with protools 7.3-no latency issues except for the pultec. Universal Audio knows this, and includes a delay compensation plug-in that can be set to values that effectively cancel out latency. How cool is this? The $500 voucher is really the way to go for customizing which plug-ins you want. The included Realverb pro is lush with a very sweet decay, and to my ears, as good as the Dreamverb-though without the four band EQ. The Fairchild and Neve compressors nail down both ends of the spectrum: classic tube vs. classic solid state analog. My only criticism is that the Neve plug-ins eat a lot of DSP power: two cards would be optimal if you want to run the compressor on more than just the master bus. My "secret weapon" of choice when recording high-end acoustic guitars is to use the Digidesign Maxim to normalize the levels on the tracks, and put the Fairchild on the master bus. For the small project studio this is the ticket.
