ReviewsInsane value on the best amp emulations
by Doug Langbehn of DugNAliss from Iowa City, IA, USA
Part of this review is a bit time-limited, because I'm writing while Sweetwater has an insanely great promotion going on for this bundle. However, even at the regular price, I want to tell you that th... read more [+]is is the guitar amp simulation product to own. April 14, 2009 Music Background: Musican, producer In addition to the amplitube line, I use Waves Guitar amp product (can't think what it's called at the moment--GTR, I believe), guitar rig 3 from Native Instruments, and a few less expensive things that I won't bother to name. In addition, I've done a lot of critical playing around with Revalver from Peavey. For the overall combination of great authentic amplifier responsiveness, very musical tones (a subjective judgment here), and flexibiity/tweakability, I don't think that Amplitube has a serious challenger. When you combine all of the individual products in this bundle together and start mixing and matching preamps, amps. speakers. mics, effects, and routing combinations--well, you're going to be happy--a bit overwhelmed, but very happy. I also own amplitube's new Fender product-which integrates very nicely with everything in this bundle. I've got to agree with multiple other critics and IK multimedia's own claims; the new Fender product is even more realistic and it is the only thing I've come across that I feel does a better emulation job and that I also like the sounds of (See my Revalver comments later on.) . However, it is notably more CPU intense. The trade off of computer power for yet another decimal place of authentic modeling is obvious--worth it in some situations--but a definite trade off. If you can afford it, I highly recommend getting both this bundle and the Fender package. (By the time you are reading this, the Fender package may be part of the bundle. I'm speculating that this may be the reason for the current special price--April 2009--but read the current contents of the bundle carefully if you are considering buying.) I've used amplitube primarily with sampled guitars (I'm primarily a keyboardist), but have recently picked up actual guitar playing and have been using a real strat through it. (Techinically, a real cheap strat--but amplitube makes it sound like a million bucks.) Either way , guitars sampled "clean", with minimal or no amplification in the electric guitar samples, or a real instrument sounds great. The amp models are very responsive to touch and signal intensity and the transition from clean to mild dirt to distortion is detailed and handled beautifully. This is where many other products fall notably short of the real thing. I want to close by giving brief contrasting statements regarding the other products I'd compare this to. If amplitube has a limitation for some applications, it is the fact that it is designed to handle mono input--quite logical for real guitars. While amplitube can do killer stereo output, with the signal division created by parallel chains within the setups, it will take stereo input and treat it as mono. I frequently like to run synths and other keyboards through amp simulators, especially to use guitar fx chains and impart some extra grit and character to the sound. The Waves product does a great job of this for stereo input, and I actually bought it more for handling such keyboard parts than for electric guitars. (It is my second favorite for electric guitar though, so if you really have dough to spend I'd recommend also checking this out as the next option after (and only after) you've bought amplitube.) I think GTR relies purely on convolution "snapshots" of amps and speakers, so the tweakability and touch responsiveness also seems more limited than what you get from aplitube. Final results can sound very great in a mix though. Guitar Rig 3 also does a great job of handling stereo input and I also use it for processing keyboard parts. The effects units in Guitar Rig include some great, unique options--but I find these more useful as extensions to my synths than for guitar. The most recently added guitar models in Guitar Rig 3 have nice responsiveness (though not as nice as amplitube). The older guitar models in the package are pretty 2-dimensional to my ears. They can work well in an overall mix, but they aren't nearly as satisfying to play. Now for Peavey Revalver, This product also has a lot of fans, and I totally agree that it also does a fantastic job of emulating the nuances of all aspects of real guitar amps. You can dig into the models down to the level of customizing the tubes. You can also create your own speaker models or import convulsions to use as speaker models. I keep fence-setting on whether to add this into my studio. (The demo produces intermittent noise but is not time-limited, so every few months, I come back to it and reevaluate.) For me though, the overall sound of what it is modeling just isn't as musically pleasing as what I get from amplitube. There's a reason that Peavey amps aren't the most expensive on the market (All due respect to Peavey. Their real amps are great values for the money. My first amp was built by them. I loved it and I still miss it.) I don't find their models of other manufacturer's amps to be as musical as the comparable emulations in amplitube either. However, I highly recommend getting demos of both products and deciding for yourself. Hope this helps close [-] |
