The electronic instrument everyone can play
You've never experienced an instrument like the Tenori-on. Even if you've never played an instrument, you'll feel home with the Tenori-on in your palm. Just by playing with the 16x16 matrix of LED buttons, you can create incredible loops, sequences, and sonic textures. Enter Random Mode and spin your finger in the direction and speed you want the music to go — the loops instantly warble, fluctuate, and groove in a wild new direction. Once you've created something you love, you can save it to an SD card and preserve your newly discovered musical genius.

"Program" as much or as little as you want
While the Tenori-on is a reservoir of possibility for anyone and everyone, even the most experienced DJs and musicians will be able to plot their musical course and program as deeply as desired. The Yamaha Tenori-on has 16 layers, which you can think of as "performance parts" or "recording tracks." You can assign separate notes and voices to each layer, and all layers can be played together in synchronization. One set of 16 layers is called a "block," and Tenori-on can store up to 16 programmed blocks in memory... which you can effortless switch between during performance. And with more than 250 voices available, flexible note lengths, easy octave switching, loop point changing, loop speed flexibility, tempo malleability, and total volume control, the Tenori-on is as musically vast as your creativity.

The audience sees the same light show you do
The Tenori-on is exciting to play and it's exciting to watch. While you play with the matrix of LED-lit buttons on your side, the audience can see the same light show on the other side. It's an engaging, interactive experience for everyone — and one that breathes new life into those dimly lit club performances and basement music-making exploits.

Sweetwater Advice

Carson McClain
Had a chance to get my hands on the Tenori-on the other day and I really liked this interesting little enigma. It is a totally new way of step sequencing that will spark some new ideas in your compostions and performances, and will leave you with a smile on your face. The Tenori-on looks identical on each side so your audience can watch you program or see the beautiful patterns displayed as you perform. The sounds in the unit are what I would call ambient, avante-garde, IDM, and techno. The unit is fully capable of doing just about any form of electronic once you dig in to its unique programming style. It runs on batteries, it has built-in speakers, and it is simply beautiful and elegant.

Unique and Inspiring with Limits

by Ben from Los Angeles, CA

Music Background:
This is a very unusual piece of gear and it lets you experiment with pattern-based song creation in some very unique ways. There are 16 levels with 16 frames each to play with and an infinite number ... read more [+]of permutations you can create by overlaying different patterns in each of the levels and cycling between each of the frames in a live performance recording mode. The lights make the whole thing very intuitive and mesmerizing to play with and watch. Limitations include:

- Onboard sounds are somewhat blippy and weak, but MIDI breakout cable lets you trigger other sources.
- Onboard user "samples" are limited to less than 1 second length and only two memory locations.
- Patterns use fixed durations across all the notes, so mixing staccato and legato phrases in a single pattern isn't possible.
- Patterns use fixed velocity across all the notes, so dynamics are also not possible.

Beyond that, it's pretty amazing what this thing can do, and if you're looking for a way to come up with some new songwriting approaches this is a novel way to do it. Dual-sided lighting makes it an interesting (if small) performance device, too. It seems to be best suited to percussion (see the articulation and dynamics comments above), but melodic patterns are easy to make, too. close [-]
