Carson McClainHad a chance to get my hands on the Tenori-on the other day and I really liked this interesting little enigma. It is a totally new way of step sequencing that will spark some new ideas in your compostions and performances, and will leave you with a smile on your face. The Tenori-on looks identical on each side so your audience can watch you program or see the beautiful patterns displayed as you perform. The sounds in the unit are what I would call ambient, avante-garde, IDM, and techno. The unit is fully capable of doing just about any form of electronic once you dig in to its unique programming style. It runs on batteries, it has built-in speakers, and it is simply beautiful and elegant. Unique and Inspiring with Limits

This is a very unusual piece of gear and it lets you experiment with pattern-based song creation in some very unique ways. There are 16 levels with 16 frames each to play with and an infinite number ... read more [+]of permutations you can create by overlaying different patterns in each of the levels and cycling between each of the frames in a live performance recording mode. The lights make the whole thing very intuitive and mesmerizing to play with and watch. Limitations include:July 14, 2011 Music Background: - Onboard sounds are somewhat blippy and weak, but MIDI breakout cable lets you trigger other sources. - Onboard user "samples" are limited to less than 1 second length and only two memory locations. - Patterns use fixed durations across all the notes, so mixing staccato and legato phrases in a single pattern isn't possible. - Patterns use fixed velocity across all the notes, so dynamics are also not possible. Beyond that, it's pretty amazing what this thing can do, and if you're looking for a way to come up with some new songwriting approaches this is a novel way to do it. Dual-sided lighting makes it an interesting (if small) performance device, too. It seems to be best suited to percussion (see the articulation and dynamics comments above), but melodic patterns are easy to make, too. close [-] |
