Squier J5 Telecaster Signature Solidbody Electric Guitar at a Glance:
  • Hot pickups, custom controls
  • This guitar is built for power
  • It's a Tele®, and then some

Hot pickups, custom controls
The custom-designed humbucking pickups use a special dual-volume setup with the bridge pickup control in the front position and the neck pickup control in the back position (John 5 prefers this setup because he spends much time giving the bridge pickup a workout). Rapid toggling the upper-bout three-way pickup switch gives you 5’s signature “kill” effect by turning off the neck pickup volume and leaving the bridge control full up.

This guitar is built for power
This unusual Telecaster produces high-octane tone and output for great modern sounds. A sizzling bridge humbucker uses a ceramic magnet, while the custom neck humbucker has Alnico 5 magnet material. You also get a three-way pickup selector switch and distinctive chrome hardware.

It's a Tele, and then some
Based on a classic Tele® design, the heart of the J5 Telecaster is an instantly recognizable alder body, a one-piece maple neck with a very comfortable modern C shape, master volume and master tone controls, and a rosewood fingerboard. This axe also features die-cast tuning machines, a 6-saddle Tele humbucker bridge, and a bound top and back.

Amazing

I've been looking for a double humbucker tele, that didn't have the giant ugly pickguard, for awhile now. I was just about to get the Blacktop version, when I ran across this bad boy and decided to gi... read more [+]ve it a chance. I'm so glad I did. The quality of this guitar will blow you away. It should last a life time. The pickups are crazy good. I prolly won't even worry about changing them. The neck is smooth as silk. It's right up there with guitars 2 to 3 times the price. It's a nice weighted, great playing, fantastic sounding, high quality instrument that should be alot higher in price. It can be a learner guitar for a student or just as easily be a work horse for an expert. It's become my #1 over all the rest I have. And at this price, I'll prolly be getting a couple more of these, just to see what else I can do with one.

Do yourself a favor and grab this one before it's gone. You'll be glad you did... I guarantee. close [-]

Like everyone says, this thing is built great, plays great and sounds great. Absolutely crazy good for a guitar of this price. The pickups are hot, made for rockin. Great Guitar

I ordered this guitar after looking at one in a shop. I liked the feel of the neck, nice and smooth on the back and frets that are pressed in well. The frets do not have sharp edges like some lower ... read more [+]priced guitars. The pictures on this site do not do this J5 justice. The chrome pick guard, really looks awesome after you peel off the clear plastic. The action is already set fairly low right out of the box, just the way I prefer it. I would recommend this guitar to anyone who wants a sharp looking guitar with humbuckers. close [-]

I was Shocked!

I had been toying around for several months, deciding whether to purchase the Squier J5 Telecaster or an American Standard Tele. I have played the Fender Tele that belonged to a friend, and liked it v... read more [+]ery much, however, the pickup configuration and the overall looks of the John 5 really caught my attention. After lengthy consideration, I decided to purchase the J5 Tele. Thinking, if the guitar did not stand up to the reviews I have read and did not perform as well as the Standard Tele, I would have the option to send it back and exchange it for the Fender.
Once I got this guitar in my hands, I was totally amazed! It has the feel of the Standard Tele with options built in. I found the guitar to be well balanced (some have complained of the weight of the body), the neck was very comfortable, and the sound is what really got my attention! This guitar can sound as clean and bright as a $3000 competitor, or as nasty as you would want. I would not hesitate to recommend this guitar to anyone, wether you are a beginner or experienced guitar player. This is one guitar that I am proud to own, and look forward to many years of playing pleasure. Fender Squier got this one right on! close [-]

Great Playing & Looking Guitar for life

by Phil Candella from Louisville KY
July 9, 2010
Music Background: Guitar player for 30 years recording for 10 semi pro
OK so what you should know about me is I have been playing over 30 years and a Sweetwater customer for 9 years. I have lots of reviews here. About 2 years ago I got to buy (finally afford) my dream g... read more [+]uitars a PRS Custom 24 & a PRS Tremonti. I have several mid level guitars Washburs, Mexican Fenders, Dean & Ibanez guitars. I play classic rock, a little modern stuff & some blusey feeling songs. I also believe a good guitar is a good guitar regardless of the name on it.

So with all that why did I get this J5 Squire Telecaster. 1. a local store had one in almost new condition for 150.00 off retail, 2. I'm a fan of John 5 3. The guitar looks VERY COOL. Last but most important 4. It plays GREAT.

The first thing you notice about it is the look something about the black & chrome with double white binding that makes you take notice. Even the drummer said that is a great looking guitar. The headstock writing is also chrome a very nice touch. Picking it up you find it has some weight to it. The neck is super comfortable & fast to play, there is NO string buzz anywhere. I don't have to push hard to play at all so it is comfortable to play for long periods. It will sustain forever. It will ring out as long as any set neck guitar. The tuners also feel very good & solid. No name on them. but they hold a tune even when I bend behind the nut. Nice job on those. All the hardware on this guitar feels solid.

Like John's guitar there is no tone control & the volumes are set with the bridge pickup at the top. That can be useful. The 2 humbucker pickups scream & would be great for the heaviest of music. They do clean up nicely & working the volume knobs you can get a nice blend of the 2. You can get a little twang but not typical telecaster twang as these are humbuckers. However, you can get a very satisfying country sound. Think Les Paul country.

So how does it sound next to my PRS? Different is the best word I can come up with. Will I go with my PRS most of the time yes. However will I take the J5 Squire telecaster to a gig & play yes absolutely. I can think of lots of songs in our set where I will use this guitar. The J5 is definitely the best of my mid levels & some of them cost 4x what the J5 retails for. This guitar is a wonderful addition for any player & would be an excellent choice for a new player. They would have a guitar for life rather one they trade in after 3 years. For me the only drawback is no trem as I like having one. I guess I could buy a bigsby for it someday.

I enjoyed playing the one in the store so much I got it on the spot. Had I not been able to do that & it was gone I would have spent the money for a new one. Squire could charge a lot more for the J5 and get it. I'm surprised but glad Fender did not do a Mexican fender version of this in the 700 range. It is a great guitar you won't go wrong. If you are looking it this I recommend you buy it now. close [-]
