American Standard updates The American Standard Telecaster is an elegantly straightforward instrument, and it's rare that a guitar that's been popular for so long can be improved upon. But that's exactly what Fender did, with a new bridge featuring six new American Standard bent steel saddles and a stamped brass plate. It's the same, only better! The new neck is super-comfortable, with a polyurethane finish and hand-rolled fretboard edges. And the premium SKB-made molded case lets you transport your Tele safely, with TSA locks, Glass-reinforced nylon trigger latches, and a form-fitted plush interior. Classic design You've probably heard the story before: Leo Fender began designing and building his soon-to-be-iconic guitars over a half-century ago, even though he didn't play guitar himself. The Telecaster represents Fender's first real success, and the fact that it remains such a sought-after guitar today speaks volumes about its quality and playability. It's been copied countless times, tweaked, mutated, modified, gutted, and bedecked with extras, but the original always shines through. The American Standard Telecaster continues this legacy by respecting the original while updating it enough to make it better than ever. Tele tone Descended from one of the true "grandaddies" of guitar designs, the American Standard Telecaster retains all the characteristics that make the Tele so popular across all musical genres. Its tone can range from articulate "chicken pickin'" cluck to warm sustain, crunchy power chords to crystal-clear chime. Only a handful of instruments stand out decade after decade, and the Tele's magical blend of playability, utility, and tone definitely puts it in among a select few. ReviewsFender American Telecaster Left Handed
by Dean Athans from New York City, NY USA
I play standards, jazz, and a little R&B, solo and in a trio. Own a couple of archtops that have the tone I like, but not at higher volumes. This Tele, with the right setup and amplification (Acoustic... read more [+] Image Clarus IIR/Raezers Edge NY8 cabinet), allows me to get a warm and clear sound that is 95% of the way to my favorite archtop's ideal sound. October 19, 2006 Music Background: Currently not gigging musician The neck is great, and it can take heavier gauge strings without any problems. I'm using the Thomastik Infeld BB013 set (.013 - .053, Nickel roundwound), and they are as easy to play on as with my archtops. The tone switch is usually set to the neck pickup, but the other two positions are also useful at times. The tone control is somewhat useful, although I usually leave it at about halfway. Artificial Harmonics come out nicely through the bridge pickup. This axe provides very even output levels throughout all registers. It appears that great care was taken in crafting an instrument that has the right amount of sustain and sweet tone, without adding muddiness to chordal playing. Comping with walking bass fills the sound space beautifully, even if the woodier tones from an archtop might be more like Joe Pass. For those who have never played a Tele, be forewarned that it is not light in weight. This one is not the heaviest I have played, but it is too much for more than an hour at a stretch. Get a good strap and a stand on which to rest it between sets and you will not be sorry. close [-] Fender American Standard Telecaster (3-Color Sunburst)
