After all the years of playing and doing audio, when I remodeled my home this past year, I included a home studio for me. Well it time to add some mikes and a couple weeks ago and I knew I needed a g... read more [+]ood instrument mike (thinking veteran workhorse Shure 57). My sweetwater rep asked me if I was open to try something new that he really liked and it was priced less. The Beyerdyanmic XG-57, so I got it - to try.November 11, 2008 Music Background: Musician, Audio As a working musician, but not an expert, I have tried it out and also have passed it around to my buddies, giged with it, tried it in the studio and we have A/B this mike in our church for a couple weeks and these are the impressions we have as of now: Nice looking and feeling mike (about same weight as Shure 57.) In use the mike performs somewhere between a 57 and 57 beta to my ears. I brought as a instrument mike, but used it in a stand for male vocals and it had a real nice sound…if your guy sounds good on a beta this has lot of that same quality to it. Like a lot of folks I need versatile equipment. It shines in the instrument miking role, as with its supercardiod pickup pattern and high gain before feedback. One could would place the beyerdynamic between a Shure 57 and a 57 beta in terms of high frequency response and something completely different in terms of low frequency response. It captures a little bit more crystalline breathiness than a 57, less than a 57 beta and with a little bit more upper mids then either. It departs from the 57 series in that it has far less proximity effect than either of the 57s. Handling noise was nicely attenuated and could easily be used at a live hand-held setting. Gain before feedback was excellent, much closer to the an Audix OM-3 in nature, however this also requires the vocalist to be more consistent with the microphone(if used in that environment) Due to its supercardioid pickup pattern and good gain before feedback characteristics, this certainly makes a good instrument mic. (it's design) It did a real nice job on the lead guitar amp last Sunday. However, it certainly can perform as a good vocal mic, in certain situations. Due to its narrow pickup pattern it's not appropriate for podiums, public speaking, and any other environment where the vocalist is not trained to be properly aligned. In high volume live settings, it could excel on stage, being far less feedback prone than other handhelds. However, the boost in the upper mids rolls on a little earlier than some other common models, and therefore may be subject to working better for some than others. close [-] |
