perfect too for becoming a better drummer and having fun

by Rob from Greensboro NC

I bought the TD-9S for its combination of sound quality and price. I am thrilled because for me the set is used as a practice tool to become a better drummer and it performs that funtion very well. I ... read more [+]love the rubber pads and was happy to save the $700 or so by not buying the X version with the mesh toms. There are some 50 preset kits available on the sound module and I have 4 sets that I seem to use the most. The fisrt is #4, Compact Kit, #18 Mixture Kit #37 Reggie Kit and #50 User Kit. All the kits have been changed to suit my needs ie. changed the bass drums on all four etc. Another for instance, I have both cymbals set up to be a ride on the inside, and a crash on the outside. I am a left handed person that plays drums right handed but I like to ride with both my right and left hands. This way I have a ride and crash available with each hand. Its a way of maximizing what I have available to me. Originally I was going to upgrade the HiHat but after a time with the standard one, I am happy and no longer wish to upgrade. The best thing about having an electronic kit is you can practice anytime, hit the drums as hard as you wish and volume is never an issue, that is HUGE!!! On a side note, in performance I play real drums and I wondered how the transition would be from practicing on the Rolands to playing actual drums live and there were no problems at all. I can hop up on a set after playing my Rolands and not miss a beat.

Final thought: I have a friend that always has to have the best, he wants a Roland and has become obsessed with their top of the line for like $5000. The thing is that he isn't a very accomplished drummer, and in the three years it will him to get the cash to buy Rolands top of the line, I am playing away everyday, getting better, getting better, working working. To me its all about getting behind the drums as often and for as long as possible, its the only way to be really good. He is missing out, one week with my Roland TD-9S and he would be pulling out the Visa card. close [-]

Roland TD-9S

I've been drumming for 15 years, but the last 5 years I've been using drum machines and keyboards for electronic music. I've wanted a great electronic kit to mix into electronic beats, but also to ja... read more [+]m with in a regular "band situation". To be honest, most electronic kits are complete crap. The sounds that come out of them are just like my keyboard drum sets. There's no variation to pressure or alteration in sound depending on where you strike the "drum."
I tried out the TD-9 with every intention of hating it with the same malice I've felt toward older Roland/Yamaha/etc. models. I was amazed, to be honest, at how far the technology has come. The hi-hat and snare are extrememly sensitive and prescise.
It sounds like I'm playing real drums. I need to play with the tom sounds some more, because they can sound a little artificial at times, and nothing can compare to a real cymbal...but I am impressed. I bought it on the spot.
I'm jamming to my electronic stuff and my ipod now and finally feel whole again. I suck as a drummer due to my 5 year hiatus, but I'm really glad I bought it. It was expensive, but when you compare what it would cost to buy a decked-out acoustic set with mics, it's actually a better deal.
Try it out, and don't be intimidated by the annoying sales guys at whatever music store you go to. Just jam out a bit. You'll like it I think. close [-]

Drum Therapy is the Norm

I prodded my budget and not looking back. This is the best we can get as a beginner and lovers of drum beat. The sound module is very powerful, and capable of realistic rendition of acoustic kits. If you can extend your budget, then its really a knock-out. You can use it in studio for recording or for all out gigs, but i use it at home only for my pleasure. Jamming from AC/DC to ZZ Top. You name it. The better the amplification, the sonic persuasion it will produce. Regards. close [-]

Really impressed!

I got a chance to mess around with this thing at a buddy's house the other day, and I've got to tell you, I was really impressed. Let's just put it this way, even when I just set the sticks on the snare drum, I got freaked out cause it made the sound of putting sticks down on a snare.
