ReviewsAfter hearing this kit, why would anyone purchase an acoustic drum kit???
by Keith Hatfield from Rochelle, IL 61068
Like many of you out there, the stage volume of our drummers acoustic kit was causing us multiple sound issues. My drummer and I started researching an alternative solution on YouTube about a month ag... read more [+]o, and purchased this kit a couple of weeks ago from Sweetwater. I would like to address the typical hot topics in the multiple reviews that we read by category:August 20, 2011 Music Background: Guitarist & Sound Reinforcement Feel: First off, our drummer has been a hard core acoustic drum kit fan for over 35 years...so you can imagine where that put his mindset the 1st time he played these. After approximately 20 hours of playing, he has grown very comfortable with the feel and fallen in love with this kit. The "hit zone" on the drum head is a little smaller, and takes a little getting used to. He categorizes the feel as "very good". The overall spacing is a little tighter than his acoustic kit...but it is not the detractor that many reviewers state it is. Even though they don't look like they would, the cymbals and hi hat have a great feel also. Different than an acoustic kit, but certainly not something that would make you not want to buy this kit. Volume: The volume of the kit without headphones or amplification is comparable to a keyboard computer when typing. It's a far cry from the volume of an acoustic kit. This provides tremendous controllability for both the stage and house volumes when running through monitors and the PA. Everyone in our band says this has made a huge difference in our ability to hear each other at a much lower stage volume than before. As far as the PA, you have total volume control no matter how small the venue. When is the last time that you could say that with an acoustic kit? Sound: UNBELIEVABLE!!! When we first set this up, our drummer put on the headphones to start playing while I hooked the module up to the PA. I watched when he started playing to see see his immediate reaction, knowing that I would know immediately if we had made the right decision with this purchase. After about 10 seconds of playing he busted into as big a smile as I've ever seen him have after numerous years of playing with him. Keep in mind, at this point I cannot hear any sound because he has the headphones on. He hands me the headphones, and says "you gotta hear this". I was blown away. That sound coming from an electronic kit...are you kidding me!!! It only got better when I hooked it up to the PA. I panned the kick left in the module so that I could run it into a separate channel on the board, and panned the remainder of the kit right. Running two different channels out of the module allowed me to "juice" up the kick drum through the subs...and the control the rest of the kit through the mains. About a dozen people have heard the kit running through the PA, and they all comment right out of the gate how awesome the drum kit sounds. They don't say it sounds good...there words are either "great", "awesome", or "excellent". How many times is one of the first comments you hear from someone about how good the drums sound? That is a statement in itself!!! I'm extremely picky about sound reinforcement, and drums have always been the "bane of my existence" in that regard for a multitude of reasons. Not any longer!!! In 5 minutes we had the best and most controllable drum sound that I have ever been able to achieve...and it will only get better as we tweak it and create our own drum sounds over time. We currently use the 80's rock preset most of the time, but will be using the modules capability to "write" our own custom sound in the very near future. Our drummer has already identified various sounds from different presets...and our plan is to take the best of each component to copy and create him a "custom" kit. I cannot imagine what the price would be to be able to accomplish this with an acoustic kit, but am pretty sure that it's well over the 3K we have invested in this kit. Customer Service: Before making this purchase, our drummer spent a considerable amount of time discussing the kit with the Sweetwater Drum Tech, and I discussed it with my Sales Engineer Dave Walent. They were extremely helpful. I've spent about 25K in equipment purchases over the past 2 years, and most of it was at a couple of local music stores. I went to them because I thought their service would be better...and was reluctant to make large buys over the internet. I WAS WRONG!!! The local service has proved to be very lacking, and I plan on making all future purchases regardless of the cost from Sweetwater!!! close [-] Sweetwater Advice
