Great feeling, great sounding — the new V-Stage Series TD-12K makes the middle range of the V-Drums line feel like first class! With new mesh drum pads all the way around, drummers can sink their sticks into the best-feeling pads in the business. The new TD-12 drum module is an upgrade from the previous TD-8, sharing the same stunning sound quality as the flagship TD-20. The new V-Pro Series is available in two classic finishes: black and white — TD-20S-WT and TD-20S-BK, respectively.

Roland TD-12 Percussion Sound Module at a Glance:
  • Great new module with 560 quality percussion sounds
  • Customize every sound to your taste
  • Built-in sequencer with additional 262 backing instrument sounds

First-class sound module in a streamlined package
With the same stunning sound quality as the flagship TD-20, the new TD-12 drum module provides hundreds of expressive instruments and play-along sequences in a streamlined, affordable package. Many of the 560 percussion sounds in the TD-12, from drums to cymbals, are COSM modeled for the ultimate in expression and realism. Plus, the TD-12 includes 262 backing instrument sounds for realistic sequence playback. The module provides the same large, icon-based LCD as its big brother, and is housed in a road-tough, gun-metal gray chassis with a friendly array of buttons, controls, and mix sliders. A dozen trigger inputs are provided, plus four audio outputs and MIDI I/O. Unrivaled V-Editing Enjoy the dozens of expert-programmed kits in the TD-12 — from authentic acoustic sets to ultra-modern electronic flavors.

Customize every sound to your taste
But the fun doesn’t stop there! Customize your snare drum, toms, bass drum, and cymbals with the modeling-based V-Editing. Change sizes and materials, attach sizzles to cymbals, increase snare buzz, and more. Then take out your sticks and enjoy! The TD-12 supports positional sensing on the snare and ride, as well as on the toms when you play rim shots. The TD-12 is also brush compatible, and features the expressive new Interval Control feature for the snare and ride cymbal, which varies the sound in natural ways based on the speed of stroke repetition.

Built-in sequencer with additional backing sounds
If you want to build your chops (or perhaps steal the show), fire off one of the 150 patterns built into the TD-12 and play along. The TD-12's sequencer stores 100 User Patterns and has 150 built-in Preset Patterns. Use the 6-part sequencer to create your own backing tracks with the 262 backing instrument sounds. Trigger one-shot samples and loops, and tap your preferred tempo into the TD-12.

These have been great for recording and live. We have NO amps or wedges on stage. Everything is fed to the mixing board and the whole band monitors with a HearBack system. (In ear monitors) As long as... read more [+] you have good speakers & sub woofers for the FOH you are good to go. Clean stage, zero ambient sound from stage, sound mans dream. This is the way to go. You do have to add an ambient mic though to realize the crowd is there. Takes a bit getting used to but your ears will thank you at the end of the night. You usually have to play around a bit with the drum sounds to get just what you want. As usual pre-sets are marginal. close [-]

Great Live, Good Recording

First let me say that the sound editing capabilities in this kit are amazing. I coveted the TD20 for quite a while, but the TD-12 finally broke my E-Drum expense threshold.

Have not ... read more [+]played these live but I can imagine that they would be awesome given the right rig(s). Sadly there is not an individual audio output per instrument, but assignment is easy to the 4 individual outs. A little creativity and compromise is worth the difference in price from the TD20.

My only real disappointment is that Midi channels are not assignable at the instrument level. I understand that this IS possible on the TD20. This is not a deal killer, but if your intent is to record midi data for re-triggering the TD-12 or other devices, it will take some ingenuity to seperate the channels. Basically I record to a single track, then use Logic Pro to seperate the events into seperate channel strips, each with it's own unique midi channel out to trigger the final audio tracks. That's the only way to acheive individual midi tracks per pad/instrument.

Still on the fence as to whether this is worth the difference in price. Works ok for me, but I would hate to be paying an engineer to perform this convoluted process.

Awesome kit, but do consider what your goals are when buying. I would suggest reading the manual in minute detail before shelling out this kind of expense. close [-]

The one we've been waiting for?

by Mark from London, UK

I recently bought the TD12 and I have to say I am blown away by the sound, look and feel of these drums. They are simply awesome. I haven't had as much fun in years. It's the type of kit I always wish... read more [+]ed I'd had, as a kid annoying the neighbours and limiting practice between coming home from school and my Mum's return from work.

It makes home recording with fantastic sounding drums an easy reality.

CONS: there are a few. The TD12 is a small, compact kit and that takes some getting used to. I also find it a little odd that the toms are all the same size. The re-sampling on the snare and cymbals is very good and a huge leap forward from the TD-8, but on certain snare sounds, I can definitely hear, albeit quietly, a slight machine-gun quality to my press rolls.

I'm being pedantic, but it would have been nice to have been able to add additional drum voices (as per the TD20). It's the problem with having 50 kits to choose from - why not 100?!

I've yet to play live with this set and anticipate there being some monitoring issues (as stated by the reviewer above). Will keep you posted how I solve these.

In short, it's a lot of money, but is very, very much worth it, merely in terms of practice opportunities, since you are almost silent, and since the play-along sequencers will do wonders for your timing. close [-]

Slight snags

I bought the TD12 about two months ago and the sound is very very good. The instuction manual isn't THAT helpful when you come to real life setting up of kits for songs and it would be nice if Ro... read more [+]land had some kind of advice line to tackle early frustrations.
Playing LIVE is fine but the bass player can't get used to the lack of real feedback from me...cos all the sound is coming from the PA. Plus whoever is mixing keeps interfering with my settings cos they aren't used to mixing it neutral so that I can control volumes for each song.I need to invest in some good foldback for the drums which does add to the expense. I thought I might get away with wearing headphones but this hasn't worked at all.
I'd be less eager on price and much keener on finding a store to buy from where the guys could actually use the e;lectronics rather than just play bthe drums. I can't easily get someone to talk to when the manual stops making sense.
In all..the best money I've spent in a long time.I am getting a lot of prejudice from the band I'm in who want to keep things the way they were. close [-]
