MAKE MINE MUSIC DESCRIPTION

The Stories Behind the Hit Recordings!
"Make Mine Music" is a fascinating read for professional musicians, recording engineers and music fans alike! In "Make Mine Music" legendary recording engineer (and diehard Sweetwater customer) Bruce Swedien tells his story in his own words. And what a story it is! While you'll get the standard autobiographical information ("I first became intrigued by the art of recording music at the tender age of 10"), this book is jam packed with a goldmine of information, no matter what you're involvement in making, recording, or listening to music. Sweetwater President Chuck Surack says, "This is one of the most engaging, entertaining and informative books I've read in years. I highly recommend it!"

If you've ever wanted to be a fly on the wall at a Duke Ellington session, or wondered what a typical session with Michael Jackson is like, this book will tell you. What's more, Swedien generously gives away detailed information from his lifetime in the studio, including insights into psychoacoustics, how he approaches the stereo soundfield, microphone selection and placement techniques, the art of mixing, and the role of technology in capturing musical inspiration. An invaluable research tool for the recording musician, engineer and producer, "Make Mine Music" is also an incredibly engaging and entertaining read no matter what your level of technical expertise and interest. The book provides a behind the scenes look at the process of creating and recording some of the best music ever produced, straight from the man in the middle of it all.

Sweetwater Expert Advice

"I have read a lot of books, but this is one I couldn't put down. Bruce is a great guy and I am fortunate today to say that he (and his wife Bea) have become good friends of mine (and loyal Sweetwater customers). If you don't know who Bruce is you might be in the wrong business. He has recorded a list of people that would make your head swim...practically everything Quincy has done, almost all of Michael Jackson's stuff, the Brothers Johnson, Ella, Miles, Duke Ellington, to the last couple of Jenifier Lopez albums and the list goes on and on. His career is truly mind boggling. Anyway, his book has amazing stories about the musicians, the music, the sessions, his recording processes..on and on. It is a fabulous read. He talks about Quincy writing "The Wiz" all in one night over a hotel kitchen table THE night before a BIG orchestral session in NY. He created the whole score without a single instrument in front of him..and they recorded it the next day without a single note mistake...then there is the story about how and why Quincy Jones never learned to drive. (He got flunked out of driving school - Quincy says that "stoplights don't fall on the downbeats"). Bruce talks about all of the stars's personalities and the dynamics of recording "We are the World". He talks about his microphone collection, all of the stars he has worked with, how he got started, various recording technologies, what motivates him, etc. As I said it is an amazing read..and I thought you might want to read it, pass it on, or ask for it as a gift.
