What's more, Nord's famous smooth-moving pitch stick and modulation wheel are onboard the Nord Stage EX 88, for expressive playing.Nord Stage EX 88 at a Glance:
Incredible sounds - and extensive control over them Whether it's a spot-on B3 organ sound you're after, a killer stage piano, or a ton of seriously thick synth leads and soundscapes, you'll find all that - and more - on the Nord Stage EX 88. Plus, in addition to its awesome soundset, in Nord tradition you've got a lot of hands-on control over them. It's easy to navigate between sounds, create keyboard zones, and take charge, thanks to the Nord Stage EX 88's dedicated "zones" on the main panel for each sound section. Premium organ section with three different organs The Nord Stage EX 88 gives you not just one, but three different organs, including their famous B3 Organ model. Based on models of 91 tonewheels, you'll enjoy full polyphony, and a natural warmness full of overtones. What's more, Nord has managed to capture the unique frequency characteristics of classic B3 organs' built-in preamplifier, so you'll get the real "body" of the B3 sound. There are nine "draw buttons" on the Nord Stage EX 88, and LED bar graphs on each draw button ensure that you have the correct drawbar settings after changing presets. Beside the B3 model, the Nord Stage EX 88 sports two famous transistor organ models from the '60s, the Vox Continental and the Farfisa Compact. Piano section with six essential sound groups Nord remains committed to delivering exceptional-quality models, and that's just what you can expect with the rich collection of pianos. Recorded at multiple velocity levels - and even with samples of key-releases - you'll enjoy all of those subtle nuances across the dynamic range, plus that sound of dampers returning when you lift the keys. There are six main sound groups - Grand Pianos, Upright Pianos, Electric Grand, Wurlitzer, Clavinet, and Electric Pianos. In the acoustic piano section, Nord even recorded all the pianos with the sustain pedal down - that way, you get the sympathetic string resonance that naturally occurs on acoustic pianos. And as for the Clavinet section, it has an equalizer of its own, which mimics the original D6 tone tabs, and even includes four Clavinet pickup selections. Nord also designed the Nord Stage EX 88's piano section to be extremely flexible - you can actually replace any piano with sounds from Clavia's library of piano samples, just by using the keyboard's USB port and Nord Stage Manager software on Mac or PC. Powerful synthesizer section with up to nine oscillators per voice There's no question that Nord knows synthesis. And with the Nord Stage EX 88, they set out to build their most powerful "mini synth" section yet, with the ultimate aim to make a beastly synth that was still as easily manageable as the Organ and Piano sections. In the end, you get a multi-oscillator synth with up to 9 oscillators per voice - all controlled from one button and one knob. From pads to leads to bass patches - they're all there. There are Classic Analog Synthesis with dual saw, hard sync, and pulse wave modulation; 3-operator FM synthesis with 32 different modulation frequencies; and Wavetable Synthesis with 32 waveforms. What's more, you can use the Unison knob to fatten up your sound - or use the 12/24dB Lowpass Filter with resonance, an Amp envelope, a Modulation envelope, an LFO, and a 2-band equalizer, to sculpt your sound. Each bank - Synth, Pad, and Bass - holds up to 100 sound programs. Designed to be a master keyboard, thanks to its Extern Section The Nord Stage EX 88 is built to be a master keyboard, thanks to its "Extern" Section. Any MIDI-connected gear integrates seamlessly with the Stage's built-in instruments. Plus, you can handle zones, splits, and layers just like the external equipment was a part of the Stage. All of the settings are saved together into a program, so you can recall advanced setups in real-time during a performance. Rich effects section, including delays, reverbs, rotary speaker, and more To give the Nord Stage EX 88's sounds that extra bit of customized dimension, you can explore the Stage's huge effects section. In fact, you can actually route the three instrument sections individually through the unit's built-in effects. And all the effects are easy to control and turn on and off. Effects Unit One lets you choose from Tremolo, Auto-Wah or Auto-pan. Unit Two features two Phasers, two Flangers, and two Choruses - all modeled from classic stompboxes. In addition, there's a delay unit, which lets you dial achieve everything from echoes to slap-back effects, and there's a ping-pong mode and tap tempo built in as well. Other effects include an EQ/Amp simulator, which puts you a 3-band equalizer and classic speaker cabinets; a Rotary Speaker Emulation; and a Master Effects section with compression and reverb. ReviewsBest acoustic piano/electric piano/hammond sounds in a stage piano ever.
by Sam from Seattle, WA USA
If you want the best and don't mind paying for it, the Nord Stage 88 is it. This keyboard literally changed my musical life; from a performing perspective as well as a personal pleasure and practicin... read more [+]g perspective.November 30, 2010 Music Background: Performing Musician The acoustic piano samples are some of the best I have heard and the Rhodes and Hammond samples blow everything else out there away. The drawbars work smoothly and instantly and the amp simulators are very realistic. Leslie rotary function is seemless and sounds great. The synth engines in the board are quite adequate, especially given the product is worth every penny without it. The aftertouch in the synth panel is great and controls like frequency and envelope work instantly and without you knowing the change happened. No distortion of the synth wave or computer-like stepping. On board effects are very real and work instantly like everything else. Great reverb with multiple settings and wet/dry control. The action is very nice and build quality is the best I have seen. Been gigging with this instrument 2 to 4 times a week for over a year and it looks and works like new. Overall, the best musical purchase I have ever made. You will not regret the decision - This will be a classic in 20 years. close [-] Loaded with character.

In these days of multi-megabyte or even gigabyte sampling, it's nice to know that someone out there isn't afraid to capture some instruments with some personality. I specifically refer to the acoustic... read more [+] piano samples in the Nord Stage. (Electric pianos will always have personality.) I personally own several of the aforementioned multi-gigabyte piano sample libraries, and while their detail is stunning, they are just too pristine. The Nord Stage acoustic pianos (grand and upright) actually sound like acoustic pianos I've played and heard recorded. And they manage to do it with and impressive library size of ~256 megs. Someone up there in Sweden has some serious programming chops. April 2, 2010 Music Background: Audio Engineer, Multi-Instrumentalist, Nerd. And of course, kudos to Clavia's commitment to keeping (almost) everything immediately accessible on the control section. (i.e. You will not get lost in menus. I HATE menus.) The only reason I wouldn't give it five stars is because the key action is a bit on the light side for my tastes - which are based on my interactions with real pianos. But this doesn't really get in the way of expression. The keybed and velocity sensors are still sensitive to a wide range of nuances in playing. A few minutes with the Nord and you'll most likely forget about the feel of real hammers with graded weights and escapement. In this regard, Roland is the clear winner for now... but just imagine if Clavia decided to one up Roland in this regard. If they got the key action improved, then I would hands down recommend that any customer in the market for a stage piano should buy this one. Period. It's worth every dollar. And it's red. Don't forget that. It will get you a date after every gig... if you're into that kind of thing... close [-] Very happy with this!

This is my first Nord, and it comes after hammering my Roland FP-2 over the past 4 years. January 25, 2009 Music Background: self-taught funky jazzer I've had mine for just over a week and just played my first gig with it. Sounds are an incrdi... read more [+]ble jump over my old Roland.... The piano's are excellent through the headphones : not all the timbre comes through when playing thro PA/monitors in fairness (although that could be the monitors fault of course). Electric pianos are utterly immense, particulary since that with the amp simulator, EQ, compressor and rotary effects you can achieve pretty much whatever rhodes sound you want. Personally I could play the rhodes patches for hours. Just brilliant - the suitcase is my favourite. Hammond is of course terrific although I wouldn't profess to be the best organ player, so probably haven't got the most out of it yet. If I can make it sound terrific I'm sure a better Hammond player could work magic with it. The effects section is fantastic - try a Clavinet with the auto-waa effect, it sounds absolutely amazing. Finally the board itself. I wouldn't say its as good as the top top end Roland keyboards, but it's very very good. It's all personal taste of course. Perhaps mine hasn't been played in enough yet, but I'm finding the action to be a little more noisy than expected. Still - it's a week old and it'll probably ease up. Overall, I'm delighted with my purchase. But this is serious money - and at this price point, much of it becomes personal preference. But all I can say is you won't be disappointed. close [-] Nord Stage EX 88
