Unbelievable Sound

by Genaro from Tampa, FL

I was looking to purchase the Fantom rack to expand my sound library, when my Sales Engineer Matt Bostater recommended the Sonic Cell as an option. He had told me that this had the new Fantom G sound... read more [+] engine in it and that I should try it. WIth it being cheaper then the Fantom rack, I took a shot. After everything I bought, this has to be the most unbelievable peice of equipment I have bought. The sound that comes out of this little black box is unbelievable. I took it out of the box, plugged it in and in 10 minutes was jammin'! It was EXTREMELY easy to use. For the price it was a low risk, high reward item and I have not regretted it for a second. I have expanded it to the max (2-SRX Boards) and am using it almost exclusively. Worth every bit of money, time and energy that I have used on it. close [-]

A Fun Little Machine!

Looks cool, love the Autechre type screen savers, defidently attractive! Soundwise it is Not the Fantom G engine, it is the Fantom X's with "some" new waveforms from the Fantom G. The acoustic timbres... read more [+] are very natural and relaxed, and very realistic. However my JV-2080 rivals it in sound quality, though not in terms of realism, but in terms of lush atmospherics, but I think once I expand it I'll like it more. I would have really loved to have seen many more Fantom X sounds in the way of Ambient, and Choirs, a little too much meat and potato sounds here. I certainly hope Roland will support this machine with new banks of sounds, like maybe including more of the categories found on the Fantom X, a wee bit disappointed not to find much in the way of Ambient, the JV choirs are by far so much more ethereal and otherworldly, The Plugin Editor is fantastic, though getting around on the Cell itself is not hard at all, if you own/owned a JV-2080 XV-5080. JD-990, XP-80 you will find the screen and menu very familiar right away, a big plus for me! I just really hope Roland provides sound support for the internal ROM. Amazing . . . outside of a more realistic acoustic sound then the JV, the JV only has 8 megs of ROM and this has 128 megs, yet I don't hear that lush warm beautiful fullness of the JV. I also own the JD-990, so in a way its overkill, but it does offer some unique timbres and waveforms that ultimately make it its own machine, and the portability factor is a huge factor for me purchasing it. I have allready created new Patches and Performances, that just sound amazing!
I will look forward to using it as an interface to utilize its internal effects. All in all if you love the Roland sound, want something affordable and small, and with all its neat bonus features,. . . it simply can't be beat. And remember many of the SRX boards hold up to three times more wave ROM than the older SR-JV, so installing 2 is almost like having 6 SR-JV boards! close [-]

The Roland SonicCell is deceptively simple looking, with its nine buttons and jog wheel. Once I began exploring the menus, I realized I would have to spend some time with the manual. The unit utilizes... read more

I got to play with this, and it is great! Gives you great sounds and audio file playback. Great for churches and "one-man band" situations. You can make great backing tracks at home, using the included SONAR LE and then put them on a jump drive and play along live at a gig. The SonicCell pretty much does everything.

It's Roland...

I'm using it mainly as a live sound module and playing it in mono so right off the top the internal piano sounds don't really cut it. They are not very expressive or dynamic and again, to me, very thi... read more [+]n sounding but I guess when they give you a piano card option, that's why! Now the good stuff... Roland has some stellar sounds. The Soaring lead sound had long been a favorite as well as the bellpads. No one has a better 1980's type bellpad sound than Roland. The sitar sounds are also way better than average. Pads are super rich, guitar sounds are always great, the synth effect sounds are ambient and outstanding. Nice small unit, reasonably intuitive and I'm editing off the unit not the computer. Deep editing on board! Cool, not like the Yamaha Motif rack XS where only software gets you into the deeper editing.
Price has come down so it's a better deal than ever. Great effects and with expansion card slots you have options but I rarely buy cards and before you know it they are no longer available because Roland's priority shifts to newer products which most manufacturers do. In closing I will say that there are some killer sounds here, rich, ambient and cutting and I haven't even touched upon the computer aspects which adds more dimension to this unit. If it had a better built in piano sound I would give it at least 4 stars for sure. It sounds great and gives you many of Roland's best sounds in a small package. close [-]
