Ultimate Chorus

EarthQuaker Devices Sea Machine V3 is a chorus pedal that gives you an unprecedented measure of control over its parameters. Sporting EarthQuaker's proprietary digital-analog hybrid circuitry, Sea Machine V3's extended delay time gives you standout chorusing effects topped off with dramatic shimmer. Sea Machine V3 is based around a short digital delay line, with controls for Animation, Dimension, and Depth. From there, knobs for Shape, Rate, and Intensity let you craft and fine-tune your chorus effect to perfection. This third-generation edition of the Sea Machine boasts improved circuitry for better sonic performance, more range on almost every knob, and silent, relay-based switching. If you've ever chorused your guitar (or keyboard, bass, or what have you), get ready for an ear-opening experience when you plug in to EarthQuaker Devices' Sea Machine V3.

Smart controls for effect fine-tuning

Sea Machine V3's Animate knob gives you control over delay time, while Dimension adjusts the amount of spatial regeneration, and Depth adjusts your wet/dry signal mix. The LFO section of the Sea Machine V3 includes Rate, Intensity, and Shape controls. Rate sets the speed of the oscillator, Intensity adjusts how much the LFO modulates the delayed signal, and Shape transforms the waveform from a soft triangle to a hard square wave. An LED shows the speed and shape of the LFO, even with the effect bypassed.

A world of modulation underfoot

It's Sea Machine V3's palette of controls, both standard and proprietary, that makes it unique - and eminently useful for everything from understated warble and classic Leslie effects to roller-coaster pitch bends, condensed arpeggiations, outrageous alien soundscapes, and more! When engaged, Sea Machine V3's transparent buffer leaves your dry, all-analog signal crystal clear and untouched. EarthQuaker Devices designed Sea Machine V3 to play nicely with the other pedals in your signal chain without distorting, attenuating volume, or inducing mud. At Sweetwater, we tend to prefer it placed after distortion pedals and before signal boosters.

Incredible sounds or the perfect Chorus pedal

This is only the second Earthquaker pedal that I own and it absolutely rocks, I get enough options to modify and get the tone that I am looking for

So much more than just another chorus!

I"m pretty much not generally a fan of chorus. I was looking for one to add depth and movement to my bass tone and this was the golden ticket. From slight color to full on ocean waves, the sea machine, as all the EQD pedals have, doesn"t disappoint. Amazing clarity and shape controls so you can add exactly the chorus amount you like as well as 3 other controls to change it"s LFO and give you a unique twist. Well done!!

Updated review: can't get enough of this pedal!

I actually wrote an earlier review (Aug 2017) that was a bit more critical, but I wanted to write an updated one to reflect how happy I am with this pedal after over a year.

The criticisms I had when I first got the pedal are still accurate (see below), but I under-estimated just how amazing this pedal is after some experimentation and how simply stunning the sounds it produces are. It has probably become my favorite pedal on my board and I get compliments all the time on the leslie-like sounds I use it for when playing with others. When I'm playing alone I experiment much more with some of the weirder ambient sounds the pedal can produce and time and time again I'm blown away by how wonderful it sounds.

To me this pedal captures a lot of the magic that excites people about the Rainbow Machine by eqd, without being a very occasional and hard to use effect. After a year of playing with it, I have to recommend this highly simply because of the joy this little box has given me!

Gorgeous sounds with some flaws

I love some of the sounds from this pedal, and I would recommend it to other players overall. Chorus is a tricky one to get right for me, as I love the sound of a rich chorus, but I hate some of the tacky 80s effects I sometimes associate it with. The chorus from this pedal is rich, atmospheric and really pleasing to my ears. The dimension knob is a really creative addition from EQD as it adds an atmosphere that no other chorus pedals conjure up and makes everything feel more spacious.

However, I cannot really give this pedal 5 stars as there are a few flaws (others may disagree if they are into more experimental music). Firstly, with the exception of the rate control, I find most of the knobs unmusical after 12 o clock. Some of the pitch swings you get when playing with the animate knob are really drastic, and the dimension knob is so strong that the delay is infinite on high settings. The shape knob goes from a sine modulation to a very harsh triangle. To EQD's credit they do mention that these 3 knobs are experimental in the manual and can be left at 0 while enjoying the pedal. However, I also find the more conventional depth and intensity knobs to be pretty extreme after 12 o clock, which is related to my next point:

This pedal will always have some degree of slapback delay. The dimension knob set at zero still gives you one slapback echo. If they could make it so there was no delay on this setting, I'd be giving the review another star! In reality, if the intensity knob is sett at halfway or less, then you can't hear the slapback much at all, so it's not a deal-breaker by any means. The reason it's a shame is that increasing the intensity to enjoy a really rich heavy chorus will increase the volume of a slapback, so that it's really obvious on higher settings.

To summarize: If you're like me and you bought the chorus to enjoy the unique atmosphere of the dimension knob, then this pedal is wonderful. If however you are also hoping to use it as a no-frills chorus then there might be better options for you.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Logan Miller

The EarthQuaker Devices Sea Machine V3 lets me cover a ton of sonic territory. I hadn't expected the intense amount of control I get from the Shape knob alone, which l've used to create everything from '80s chorus and flange to Leslie and Uni-Vibe tones. Putting it through its paces, I've tried dialing in DeMarco-style heavy modulation - the kind that borders on ring modulation - and it was easy. It's like the Sea Machine itself is its own instrument, and its been a huge inspiration for me to discover cool new sounds.
