Steinberger Guitars: A Marvel in Stability!

The Steinberger SS-2F Custom joins Steinberger's latest tribe of cutting-edge Synapse guitars. From its unique appearance to the complex engineering of its CybroSonic Neck, every element of the SS-2F Custom's design was created with one idea chiefly in mind: Stability. Supreme intonation and a hardy composite neck are just two end results of Steinberger's innovation, while a new standard in player-guitar trust could well be a third. Incredible EMG humbucker tone coupled with the ultimate in reliability: the Steinberger SS-2F Custom is a guitar you won't put down.

The Latest Steinberger Masterpiece
Ned Steinberger breathed new vision and life into stringed instruments when he introduced the L2 bass at Summer NAMM in 1979. Innovatively designed without headstocks, the L2s astonished the music world and prototypes were quickly sold to such esteemed players as John Entwistle of The Who, Tony Levin of King Crimson, and Andy West of The Dregs. Since then, Steinberger basses and guitars have continued to impress musicians - and engineers! - the world over. Their cutting-edge Headless Tuning systems make way for stability never thought possible, while their CybroSonic necks and EMG humbucking pickup systems allow for an extensive range of tonal possibilities.

DoubleBall/SingleBall Tuning System with Headless Design
Originally, Steinberger guitars featured an exclusively DoubleBall Bridge that eliminated the need for a headstock. The strings came through and locked down on the bridge for incredible stability. Plus, with virtually no manual feeding and cutting required, you could change strings in under a minute. Today, the Synapse SS-2F Custom has a redesigned headpiece so you can enjoy using these special double ball-end strings as well as your favorite traditionals. This premier system allows you to dial into tune using precise micrometers rather than standard tuners - and when you get in tune, you stay in tune. Also, because Steinberger guitars need no headstock, they're extremely ergonomically balanced and comfortable to hold during longer jam sessions and performances.

"Zero-fret" Rather Than Traditional Nut
By employing a "zero-fret" design instead of a traditional nut, intonation and action are greatly improved. Plus, you can use a variety of different string gauges because there's no nut to widen.

CybroSonic Neck and Phenolic Fingerboard
All aspects of Steinberger guitars are on the edge of design, and that's exactly the case with the SS-2F Custom's CybroSonic neck. Inside the wood is a U-shaped composite graphite structure with an integrated truss rod: You get full-on control of your instrument while enjoying the added stability the composite material provides. A durable phenolic fingerboard complements the neck, and, due to its material, it's dead-zone free for the ultimate in performance. Plus, the Synapse's neck-thru-body design ensures distinctive tonal clarity, sustain, "pop," and response with signature Steinberger stability

EMG Humbucking Pickup System
The Steinberger Synapse SS-2F Custom features high-quality EMG-81 and EMG-85 humbucking pickups that work in concert with the guitar's design features to provide broader bandwith and, most importantly, its unique, robust tone.

Integrated Tool Holder
Steinberger guitars are engineering marvels - not only designed to deliver stunning stability, but to become the kind of guitar you want to play. Rather than taking your axe in for a complicated setup process, you can adjust intonation yourself. You don't need to haul around a workbench and tool box to make adjustments - all the tools you need are stored onboard the SS-2F Custom inside its handy recessed tool holder.

Larger Body with Ergonomic Sculpting
Steinberger's first guitars were smaller than traditional instruments. And, while well received, Steinberger decided to create a guitar that would feel more comfortable and natural to the average player. With the Synapse series, the amount of frets was decreased from 24 to 22 to make way for a longer, larger body. Still, Steinberger was adamant about ergonomic detail: The Synapse is carved so it hugs and contours comfortably to the player, while a back cutaway lets the instrument lean in a little bit so you get a better view of the fingerboard.

Fantastic

Let's be objective here. If you want a small compact travel guitar that feels like a real instrument and is absolute quality then this is the way to go. Does not look or feel in any way like like an... read more [+] inexpensive travel guitar. It is surprisingly small with a gig bag that fits like a nice form fitting glove. The finish is top notch just like any other top quality finish on a top quality guitar. It weighs 6 lbs, which means the people that designed it actually put some thought into it. It has sustain and maintains that tone and sound. Granted, it does not have ground breaking tone like a Les Paul Custom, but it has its own sweetness that is to be really appreciated. Besides, if this is used a travel guitar (as I am using it), then it is way beyond anyone's expectations in terms of function, sound, quality, and overall playability. The nice thing is, you could use this bad boy at home or at a gig just like you would any other guitar. Not to be mistaken as a "spare or backup" guitar. This is first rate. Factory set action is perfect, you can easily adjust it to your liking. It has EMG 81 and EMG 85 pick ups. Who doesn't like those? No matter your musical tastes, this is one instrument that will not disappoint in any way. It may actually surprise you and make you wonder why you didn't get it before. Kudos to the genius who developed the small folding latch for the lap rest, ergonomic solved! The upper strap button (or whatever you call it) could have been designed a bit better, but it does not interfere in any way with playing. Just a matter of "I like that strap button there" versus "I don't like that strap button there."

Overall, excellent. I gave it a 5 because:

1. I have several travel guitars and this one is by far the best one, by a long shot
2. solid construction body and top notch finish
3. EMG 81 and 85 active pickups!
4. ergonomically solid (about time)
5. you could rock out practically any sound through any rig and be completely happy
6. takes both standard and double ball ended strings
7. excellent gig bag with tight form fitting fashion made to carry anywhere and easily close [-]

Not thrilled, Where's The Graphite

Very pretty looking but it's a fake veneer top` and no graphite neck !!!
This doesn't feel close to my Custom LSR Steinberger style guitar
This guitar was bought as a spare, I kept it bu... read more [+]t I dread using it,
I should have returned it when I had the chance !!!!!!!!!
The metal on the bridge looks like cheap zinc diecast or pot metal
The pots, pickups & electronics have all been replaced
The Hohner Guitars cost much less and they appear to be exactly the same guitar, For about 1/3 the cost
I should have bought another LSR, after I paid for the new pickups I only saved about 350.00 from what I could have got and I would have had a grapite neck, really good electronics, better wood and something I could have been proud of close [-]
