From Our Research Team:

Add Sampling To Any Percussion Set-Up!

Until now, integrating custom drum sounds into a percussionist’s setup meant configuring complicated drum triggers and a MIDI module. That’s why Roland developed the SPD-S Sampling Pad—to give drummers and percussionists an easier and more affordable way to trigger sampled drum sounds and loops. With its generous sampling time, CD-quality sound, and time-tested rubber pads and edge triggers, there’s never been a better way to play custom drum sounds!

Roland SPD-S at a Glance:
  • Use it with your drum kit!
  • Tons of great sounds included.
  • Multi-effects for sound sculpting onboard.
  • Plenty of the right I/O makes using the SPD-S a joy.
  • Expand your sounds with CompactFlash!

Integrates easily with your kit
A great alternative to acoustic triggers and a rack sampler, the SPD-S lets you play up to eight sounds using six durable rubber pads and three superb-feeling edge triggers. There are no complicated settings to make. Just record a sound, assign it to a pad and go. Up to 12 minutes of sampling is provided in Long mode, along with CD-quality sampling and easy editing including Truncate and Trigger Mode functions.

Choose from pre-loaded or sampled sounds
With room for 399 User waveforms, the SPD-S can store plenty of samples. Better still, there are also 181 ready-to-play waveforms pre-loaded into User memory. These sounds are unique to the SPD-S and include a variety of acoustic and electronic drums, percussion, sound effects and phrase loops that can be combined with user samples to create the ultimate drum kit. A sampling CD is also included, making it easy to expand the onboard sounds.

Powerful sound creation tools
With 30 multi-effects algorithms and a unique ambience effect, the SPD-S offers endless sound-sculpting tools. Just add an effect and resample the output for quick and easy triggering! Using the Phrase Maker function, you can create custom phrase loops by resampling a pattern being triggered from the pads. And tweaking a sound or effect during performance is easy—just twist the front-panel knobs or use an optional expression pedal.

Expandable and customizable
The SPD-S has a stereo input and can accommodate up to two trigger units for playing a drum pad in either a head or head/rim configuration. And with MIDI In and Out, it makes a great controller and module as well. Drummers will also appreciate being able to assign two waveforms per pad and switch them via velocity or footswitch. The pads and the optional footswitch also make for an easy way to stop sounds, switch Patches and turn effects On or Off.

Convenient CompactFlash storage
The SPD-S works with readily available CompactFlash media—making it easy to expand the onboard sampling time, store custom sounds, and even import or export .WAV/AIFF files using your Mac or PC.

Roland SPD-S Features:
  • Compact percussion multi-pad with CD-quality sampling
  • Play any 8 sounds simultaneously via 6 pads and 3 edge triggers
  • Up to 380 seconds of 44.1kHz user sampling (95 seconds in Fine mode)
  • 200 User waveforms and 120 "ready-to-play" Preset waveforms
  • Resampling function and onboard pattern sequencer
  • 28 multi-effects and ambience add dimension to sounds
  • Wave memory expandable via optional Compact Flash cards
  • Mounts easily to conventional drum stands and hardware

Add the Roland SPD-S to your set up and create YOUR sound YOUR way!

We have used this for 4 years or so straight with no problems. I almost feel like getting another as a backup. Mostly used for percussion. We also have several samples that we use all the time and ... read more [+]more when we go in with out a keyboard player. Very well built. close [-]

Why is it no major kits have this function built in?

I've been hunting down a product like this for years, and I am about to order a second one plus a pair of stands! You cannot find 512 MB cards in stores, but you can get them pretty cheap in bulk on E... read more [+]bay. I just got six cards for about ten bucks after postage and everything.
I compose my music entirely from found sounds, such as breaking glass, clanging metal and trashcan percussion. I can tune and edit noises in my fantom and resample them into this for my drummer to play while I perform keyboards. My pedal section is a PK-5 attached to a VP-9000, and it sounds nothing like these kits Roland designs to sound like acoustic kits. I record the noises, I create the drum sounds. None of the crappy pre-sets are EVER used on this thing. Presets suck. Any noise you can think of is now playable as a drum part. Isn't that why electronic drumming is awesome? close [-]

Enjoy it.... While it lasts!!

The SPD-S is super fun to use!! Especially as a MIDI controller!
The pad layout is great and overall easy to use, though there definitely is a learning curve for navigating through menus.
... read more [+] It's great that you can import sounds but it's quite a long and specific process. Still shocked that there's no USB.
Roland is a great maker of keys & samplers but they sure need to figure out how to get with the times and have a few simple "drag & drop" programs for their products to use with computers.
There's gonna be lots of ups and downs but really the SPD-S is overall a great addition to a drumkit or as a standalone kit.
The overall volume is quite low compared to other Roland drum pads.
There's two main things to know when buying this:
The the pad sensitivity is downright awful and the pads WILL start to double trigger or simply die out eventually. Sad to have such huge issues with something that's close to perfect.
Cheers! close [-]

Ignore the Bad Press in Forums

Did a lot a research before picking up this baby. Lots of forum entries point out specific issues (e.g., difficulty of removing Compact Flash card; limit of size on Compact Flash card; etc.). Sure, it... read more [+]'s not perfect, but I've found easy workarounds to all the issues cited (e.g., make a little "tab" on the Compact Flash card with Scotch tape stuck to top and bottom). Others said the pads weren't very velocity sensitive. I found that by adjusting the velocity curve on the pads to non-linear they worked fine. Of course they'll never be as responsive as something like V-Drum pads, but this is a different beast. I also found that by using non-linear velocity curves in BFD2, the sensitivity of the pads was even more natural (in my opinion). One thing to note, if you plan to get one of these, make sure you can buy one or more 512MB Compact Flash cards, since that's the maximum size, even though cards this small are no longer being made. And yes, many of the unit's native samples are pretty useless. But you're buying a sampler unit to make use of your own sounds anyway, right? close [-]

When it came time to start from scratch with the studio, I had a lot of questions. The Sales Engineers I've worked with are really friendly and patient, and the guidance they provided was invaluable; they basically helped build the studio.
