From Our Research Team:

Seymour Duncan - It's all about the tone!

Seymour Duncan's SFX-04 Twin Tube Mayhem performs double-duty as a high-quality guitar preamp and stellar tube-driven overdrive. The Twin Tube Mayhem uses a duet of premium, mil-spec, subminiature, USA-made Phillips-Sylvania 6021 dual triode tubes, and generates a tone that's great for old school metal, new metal, thrash, death, and doom. The key to the SFX-04's great sound is its ability to run high-plate voltage, allowing the tubes to really cook, creating face-melting tones. Take your tone to new sonic heights with the SFX-04 Twin Tube Mayhem.

Sound
So how does it sound? One word: Mean! The perfect choice for any kind of aggressive music with a special leaning toward metal of any kind, the SFX-04 Twin Tube Mayhem is perfect for shredding. Plug in your guitar (with high-output Duncan pickups, of course!) and tap into the perfect metal tone.

How it works
The high plate voltage and 100% vacuum tube signal path allow the tubes to operate at their fullest potential and provide maximum dynamic range. Additional gain is achieved with a high voltage, low noise, discrete Class A input stage. The solid state input stage increases the resistance of the stomp-box to microphonics. The result is maximum dynamic range, the most gain, and the heaviest tone your expect from a great tube preamp voiced for metal. Also features a user-selectable 4dB or 8dB boost for pre-setting rhythm and lead levels, true bypass, and a fully encapsulated toroidal transformer for quiet operation. A heavy duty steel chassis ensures years of reliability.

Seymour Duncan SFX-04 Twin Tube Mayhem Features:
  • Gain: Before Level Compensation - 97 dB, After Level Compensation - 71 dB
  • Nominal Output Level - 0.25 Vrms (-10dBu)
  • Max. output level before clipping - 5 Vrms (16dBu)
  • Input Impedance: 100KOhm
  • THD @ 100mV RMS output - .5%
  • Noise @ Output - 4mV (< 3dB hum content)
  • Boost Footswitch Gain
  • Two selectable boosts, 4dB and 8dB. No effect on tone, just increased level.
  • Active Equalization Section: Bass Control: 126 Hz, Q = 1.5, Gain = +/-12dB; Midrange Control: 596 Hz / 1389 Hz, Q = 1.5; Gain = +/-12dB; Treble Control: 2.93 KHz, Q = 1.4, Gain = +/-12dB
  • Power Consumption - 11W
  • External Dimensions - 7.50" X 6.62" X 1.96"
  • Weight - 3.15 lbs.

Your tone begins with Seymour Duncan!

Great, Agressive, High-Gain Tube Tone

by Sickroy from Oceanside, California USA

I own a Mesa Recto 50 watt half stack and anyone who has played a Recto knows that the distortion on that amp (preamp) is brutally sweet. After playing this monster for a few years I started geting sp... read more [+]oiled and wanted that same tone while I was practicing. I tried quite a few pedals and most of them didn't come close. Then SD came out with this monster. I bought it and it is the best $227 I've ever spent. With my ES-335 ready to go the twin tube mayham, in front of a solid state Fender Champion 110 that I use for practice, blew the doors off my garage and then some. It also worked extremly well with the Champs volume at (an apartment acceptable) one. It also worked well in front of a Marshall MG10 practice amp. The one down fall is when I used my ESP with active EMG 81-85 pickups. I really had to tweak the settings on the guitar, the Mayham and the amp. I guess with all that gain in the pickups plus the Mayham equals overkill. Nothing a little (or a lot) of adjusting of the EQ wont cure. All in all the preamp pedal worked best with a guitar that has pasive, but high quallity pickups(my 335 has Gibson 57 classic and 57 classic plus pups) moderate to high gain, in front of a clean as wistle channel amp. Not that it doesn't sound good with other settings but so far to get that Boutique high-gain monster sound that's one way of doing it and I couldn't be happier! close [-]

BRUTAL!

Distortion for a Refined ear.. Saturation -Separation - Sustain

Saturation -Separation - Sustain, these words are worth saying again for in my opinion it best describes the pedal. It is very lush sounding, not thin and over buzzy like-Metal Muff/Metal Zone, full r... read more [+]ange on the eq that's nice, voicing contour switch for the mid's, and selectable boost (4db or 8db) that won't change your dialed in sound. Closest thing to a tube amp I've heard that fits on you pedal board. If you are looking for super tight, heavy bass response, circuit type sound from the above mentioned pedals, look elsewhere. But if you are looking to an honest Tube Sound, without buying an amp, You need to Check this out. Even with the gain @ 75% I can still hear all of the tonal inflections of minor 7th chords, 9th chords, it has a natural presence, and is very responsive to the volume knob on your guitar, cleans up nicely. Works very well with other effects, chorus, delay, wah. The only reason I did not give this a 5 is because it is not a Mesa Rectifier in a pedal, and 5's are over rated. I am Very well pleased with this investment, it sounds amazing @ Gig/Show volume levels. Every time I play people want to know how I am getting that sound without a tube amp, or going directly into the house P.A., or playing through a S.S. head. Definitely for grown up's. close [-]
