From Our Research Team:

Affordable Paul Reed Smith Sound and Feel!

The Paul Reed SE Custom sounds alive from the day the rough blanks for the bodies and necks are cut. The entire instrument works as one to deliver an evenness of tonal color, amplitude and feel no matter where you are on the fingerboard. The Paul Reed Smith SE Custom features a solid mahogany body with a visually stunning flamed maple top, a glued-in mahogany neck, two PRS designed SE standard humbucking pickups with Zebra coils, and a PRS designed Tremolo bridge.

Paul Reed Smith SE Custom at a Glance:
  • Mahogany Body with flamed maple top.
  • 22 fret Mahogany neck, wide-fat carve.
  • Rosewood fretboard and moon inlays.
  • SE standard humbucking pickups with Zebra coils.
  • PRS Tremolo bridge and non-locking tuners.
  • Grey Black with creme pickup covers, creme switch tip, and black knobs.

The Wood
With a solid mahogany body and a mahogany neck, the PRS SE Custom has a sweet, full mid-range, while the flamed maple top adds a bright upper register, The PRS SE Custom 's neck has a 25" scale length mahogany 22 fret neck with rosewood fretboard and moon inlays. The 25" scale allows ease of string bending as with a 24 5/8" scale but with the added harmonic range of the 25 1/2" scale. The Wide Fat neck-carve on the SE Custom has the same nut width as the Wide Thin neck but has a big comfortable profile, similar to the PRS Regular neck. Because of its strength and longer "heel", the Wide Fat neck produces warm tones with lots of sustain.

PRS Electronics
The SE Custom's pickups are two SE standard humbucking pickups with Zebra coils to give you plenty of power to push a Marshall. PRS Pickups are built in-house to Paul Reed Smith's exacting specifications. Years of work and research have been spent on the important details such as focusing on the highs so they sing instead of shriek, or contouring the bass tone so it's punchy, not boomy. After all, the subtleties are what make the difference in how your pickups sound

The PRS SE Custom comes with a 3-way toggle Master Volume and Tone Control.

PRS Tremolo Bridge
Back in 1984, Paul Reed Smith was granted a patent on his tremolo system. The design elements are simple and resemble the traditional fulcrum tremolo but with some important differences.

1. In the front of a PRS bridge, the six leading edge screw holes are counter-sunk from underneath, providing six brass knife-edge fulcrums. These rest against the six notched brass body mounting screws. This knife-edge set-up ensures that the bridge will return to pitch after use.

2. The pocket in the tremolo bridge keeps the six individually adjustable saddles from moving sideways, thereby eliminating another traditional cause of tuning instability.

3. The tremolo block is drilled out so the ball ends rest right up under the bridge base plate. This leaves less string behind the bridge saddle so there is less chance of detuning, via proper string stretching.

4. There are no rough edges.

5. All adjustment screws are inset and made of brass.

6. The unthreaded tremolo arm fits into a hard plastic sleeve staying where you put it, via a small set screw on the side of the bridge that faces the tail end of the guitar (where the intonation adjustment screws are located) therefore it will not wobble or break off in the block.

The Finish
Utilizing modern finishing technology, PRS has developed high-gloss finishes and stains that exquisitely highlight the color and grain of while retaining the fast, smooth feel of vintage lacquer.

Because color is an important component in any guitar's appearance, the PRS dyes are specially blended to look their best under stage lights, shining with such luster and brilliance that the guitar truly looks as good as it sounds. The PRS SE Custom has a Grey Black finish with creme rings, creme switch tip, and black knobs.

'Nuff said!

by Mark Williams from Arizona

Music Background: Bachelors in jazz performance , professional performer and songwriter
I have been playing professionally since the age of 14. I am now 43. I have played just about every kind of guitar on the planet and even endorsed a few in my younger days.
When I was in colle... read more [+]ge studying jazz I would have killed for a guitar like this.
These days I play more for the pleasure of it but sound is still just as important to me as it ever was.
While surfing around on the internet I ran accross the SE and was a little confused. I naturally had to find out where these things were made for such a low price. I assumed that it was China.
Being a little skeptical I went to the store to try one out. I didn't even pick up an American PRS that day I just put my money down on the SE.
Holy Moly Batman. All of my Jacksons, Hamers, and Fenders are now just back up guitars.
I don't know if its my style or the way that I play, but I can effortlessly pull tones out of this guitar than even my most custom Hamer.
I don't know why but it's one of the best guitars that I have ever played. Clean, dirty, or otherwise.
'Nuff said. This is going to be a classic guitar that players will be looking for for years to come. Kind of like the old Les Paul Jr. and the Dan-electros from the 60's and70's close [-]

I couldn't be happier with the guitar or my experience with Sweetwater. I looked at a lot of guitars, read lots of reviews and decided to try (ordering a guitar without ever playing it) the PRS SE Cu... read more [+]stom. I almost waited for the LP style but have no regrets. This guitar is everything I ever wanted in an electric. close [-]

Amazing guitar for $550

This guitar is awesome! It looks great, and sounds even better.

I thought I'd have to swap the pickups but once I got it I really dug the sound of them.

The neck makes f... read more [+]or easy playing (it's the same wide-fat that you'll find on many of PRSs higher end models).

The only problem is if you get too crazy with the tremelo then it can slip out of tune. I don't have that problem personally, but I have read about other people who do. But locking tuners and a new nut solved the problem for all of them.

Sure I'd rather own a USA Paul Reed Smith, but as far as I'm concerned the SEs are the absolute best guitars you can get in the price range. close [-]

Top of the line quality in affordable range.

Keep in mind, I've spent the past 20 years a stubborn Fender Strat advocate...for me, there was no other guitar worthy of purchase:
This is the best value I've found in a guitar in the 20+ years ... read more [+]of playing. Now, forget the 'value' and 'affordability' for a minute...this guitar 'plays' incredibly. The wide fat neck ensures effortless chord execution, super fast and smooth neck and perfect action balance...just enough string tension to bend to the moon, yet low enough to shred up and down the neck effortlessly.
The 'stock' pickups sound like custom upgrades, delivering a nice clean tone to a fat, sustained 'in your face' distorted attack.
The hardware is even impressive...tight, smooth and 'balls on' accurate machine heads, nice tremolo, sturdy volume/tone knobs.
Aesthetically, the guitar is just awesome...well designed, perfectly balanced between contemporary and cool, yet beautiful.
Back to the 'value'...all this for less than $800! If you can't afford to drop a few grand on your 'dream' guitar...DON'T. Try this one! 'You can't always get what you want, but you'll get what you need'.
The PRS company have raised the bar to a new level in all the industry in terms of quality in the 'affordable' guitar line...so high, in fact, I doubt the competitors will be able to even remotely meet the challenge.
VERY nice...wow! close [-]

I have to say it's the most personal order I've ever made from the pre-ship phone call, to the email, and finally the candy in the box. Thanks! I don't think I could beat the customer service even in a local shop
