Boss RC-20XL Loop Station Pedal at a Glance:
More, Better: The RC-20XL picks up where the popular RC-20 leaves off, as it offers more recording time and more features, but at the same affordable price as its predecessor. The RC-20XL inherits the same "hands-free" pedal operation from the RC-20: Record, Play, and Overdub can be done with the left pedal - all the while your hands are free to play your instruments. But now you get approximately 16 minutes of recording time to capture and store loops or one-shot phrases (three times that of the RC-20), and you can work your way backward thanks to the new Undo function, a necessity when making mistakes during overdub. Performance Tools: The RC-20XL has 11 memory tracks, in which you have the choice of storing either one-shot phrases or loop phrases. During your performance, you can switch between the tracks with an optional FS-6 Dual Footswitch, or two FS-5U footswitches (momentary-type). The Undo function can be a useful and musical function for erasing your previous phrase and instantly layering a new one. After you have dazzled your crowd, now its time to bring it to an end. The RC-20XL offers three stop options for this purpose. When you hit the pedal, you can either immediately stop the playback, let the phrase play until the end, or fade it out. Total Control From the Floor: Complex, multi-layered performances can be created in real-time with RC-20XL. Tap into powerful performance features such as One-Shot, new Stop options, and Two-Way Phrase Shifting. You can control the direction of phrase-shift by using a pair of footswitches. Bought this pedal as an addition to my Boss GT-8 Guitar Effects. The RC-20XL is amazigly simple to use. Oce you have the tap control figured out you can become your own band. This pedal is really good for on the fly looping, tempo controlled saved loops for use with very precise live drumming or a computer tempo controlled live sound. It does not allow you to undo more th... read more [+]an the last loop recorded which is a disadvantage in that unlike a computer you can't undo more than the VERY LAST function. So say you loop your basic track and then add 2 fills each with independent loops - you can only erase the last loop you add which poses a problem when dropping back to your basic track. you can write those 3 loops to one phrase but in that process you have to mute out the recorded loops in order for them to be saved. You can do this w/o the flow of sound ending by switching (by hand) the phrase selector knob to the next open phrase, fading out or out-right ending the looped phrase, waiting for the unit to reset itself (1-5 seconds), and recording your new loop on the next phrase slot and layering it all the while playing the difference. Then to switch between phrases you either have to do it by hand or by using 1 fsu5 (optional) pedal. This pedal allows you to skip to the next phrase i.e. if you're on 1, hit the pedal and you have a phrase loop on 2 then it goes to 2. if you don't have a saved loop until 3-11 it goes to the next available or back to 1 whichever comes first. Two fsu pedals will toggle up /down depending on which one you hit. The f series 6 pedal has two stomp pedals which eliminate the need for two fsu5s and the mono y mono to stereo cable that is needed. One of the great things is that you can record a loop using distortion, save it, and then record another loop without distortion but with reverb and it plays both the way you initially recorded them. - you can change values on individual pedals and record loops with different, say, reverbs from the same pedal. it does have a reverse function which with an additional fsu 5 pedal you can switch in and out while playing a single looped phrase. There are a few more pedals out there - line 6 14 second looper..., boomerang, old EH 16 second dd, but for 250 dollars this does the trick. Not hard to operate out of the box. The stock sounds are a bit annoying and I wish the guide tones had a selector switch for headphones only. I also wish you could toggle back and delete more than the last track as songs have a tendancy to dynamically rise and fall throughout their duration. Perhaps the RC-50 does this. So this pedal is great if you can make use of it otherwise get another guitarist and skip the robotic replacement. close [-]

Let's face it, BOSS pedals are always great, but they have really outdone themselves with the RC-20XL. I am a cellist, and it is difficult to layer live strings on the fly. With the RC-20XL, I was a... read more

Randy AkinsThe RC-20xl is breath of fresh air for the solo musician. It is an essential tool for me as a solo acoustic singer/songwriter. I use it to build complex musical arrangements all with my guitar, my voice, and my RC-20xl. It is my rock band. The benefits to this product are amazing. Too much noise
by Mike from Harrisburg, pa
This pedal is neat but there is some kind of clock noise that was way too noticable for me. Especially if you set it up the way they tell you to with the peak light flickering when you play. It's li... read more [+]ke a pulsing electronic clock noise. You can cut the input and boost the output to mask it but if you layer 2 or 3 things the noise builds up in each track enough to come through. I took this one back and got the rc2. The rc2 has enough of the features that rc20xl has. While the rc2 has a little noise it's way more acceptable than the rc20xl. Oh and I can't figure out how to make the mic input very useful. First off it's 1/4" so somehow you have to convert it from the xlr. Secondly there is only one output so unless you can somehow figure out how to run this through a mixer or something to split the signal, it's going to be eq'ed just like you guitar signal, which will probably not be mixed for your mic. But bottom line is it's just too noisey. close [-]
