A true TONE MONSTER!

by Michael Huwaldt from Denver, CO USA

Music Background: hobbyist/off and on band member
I own, and play, 10 other vintage amps ranging from a 57 Champ to a 65 Super Reverb and love them all. However, since playing the RA-100 I have found a whole new stratosphere of tone. There are so man... read more [+]y wonderful aspects of this machines tone it's difficult to narrow it down to any one or two. The most obvious to me, however, would probably be the incredible headroom it demonstrates. Also, all three modes are unique and totally awesome, each in their own right. Now I'll have to justify my collection when there's really only one I want to play!! close [-]

Versitile Head

Music Background: Weekend Gigger
I acquired this head along with a 4x12 rectifier cabinet a little over half a year ago, and I am quite pleased. You can certainly use it at home, and out at gigs. Personally I try to limit its use to... read more [+] gigs, because I'd really like to limit how quickly I run through tubes since I am merely a weekend gigger. I use it primarily at 100 watts with all my knobs around noon, and it just sounds amazing. I find that in band settings with a heavy handed drummer, the clean sound has trouble penetrating the mix, which is a shame since its so nice and shimmery. It's like a mix of fender chime and mesa note definition. With increased mids and volume it becomes more useable, but also more painful for your audience, this is why I stick primarily to the gain channel / channels, which cut like a knife. I'll use the low mode predominantly, and just play with my volume knob, and when I need to kick it into high gear I switch over to the high mode which will have its volume set a little higher. Low mode is very classic rock rhythm and gritty cleans (I've used it for SRV, Hendrix, RHCP's, etc). High mode is good for 90's punk, early metal, hair metal, and most things shy of lets say death metal (I've used it for Guns and Roses, Black Sabbath, Blink 182, Green Day, etc). The amp takes pedals extremely well. That is what I generally use the clean channel for (ex. I'll run an ab-synth fuzz into the clean channel when playing muse stuff). All in all great head for a gigging musician who takes their tone seriously. close [-]

Another home run from Mesa boogie

by Mike from Atlanta, GA

This is a killer amp for those looking for a British oriented sound combined with hi gain crunch and capabilities Mesa is typically known for.

It really is a unique voice...while trendi... read more [+]ng toward British circuits, it's not a Marshall clone. It's hard to describe, but to me it has a fuller and less compressed character. Also even though it uses EL34's it doesn't seem to get ice-picky on the top end. I've also tried it with 6L6's and it sounds good, although I think it's really voiced with the EL34's in mind.

The channels are ideally voiced. It takes a minimum of tweaking to come up with great tones in all three modes. Also, I'm really impressed with voicing on hi gain/lo gain modes. The shared EQ is not an issue at all, Mesa really nailed the tones and gain stages on these modes.

The power soak is a cool feature as well....it has come in handy on several gigs and allows you to knock the stage volume down without thinning out the tone.

I also own a Mark V and Dual Rec so am familiar with MB products. This amp fills a unique space compared to those 2. It still has the authority and gain on tap you would expect, but combined with the british vibe it's totally killer and different. close [-]

Rock / Blues Tone Monster

by Peter Doerner from Florida

Music Background: 30+ yr Musician.
It was time to find the next level of my tone after playing Marshalls, Fenders, etc. over the years. I am a classic Rock and Blues player, so many of the High Gain products availalble did not fit the... read more [+] bill. After extensive research I selected the RA 100. One of the attractive and unique features was the Power Soak. It allows the amp tone to roar with out blowing the audience out of the room. After playing the head for the last month, I can say the research and cost was well worth it. Quality of the tone is superb with both single coils and humbuckers, responsiveness is excellent, and simpliciity of use excels. The only improvement I would make would be to have Reverb control on the footswitch. All in all, for me, Boogie has hit a home run! close [-]

owned many heads...this is best yet.

I have to say it's the most personal order I've ever made from the pre-ship phone call, to the email, and finally the candy in the box. Thanks! I don't think I could beat the customer service even in a local shop
