Simultaneous 4-Channel Recording The 4 XLR/Phone combo jacks come with switchable phantom power and give you a choice of MONO, STEREO, STEREO X2, or 4CH recording. Digital input/output is also provided. Four-channel recording gives you exceptional flexibility. For example, you can use mics to capture the ambience of a performance hall while using line input to record the performance itself. Or you can record at several different level settings simultaneously. Waveform Editing Using Only the R-4 The R-4 is all you need to edit waveforms. Just watch the waveform on the LCD as you edit. Scrubbing playback with the shuttle dial lets you set the edit points precisely by sound. The built-in wave editing is designed to offer the user immediate access after recording to make quick edits before getting into the studio. This would be for situations where you either won't have access to editing later, or just want to do it while you remember what you need to edit. It is perfect for sound designers or those who need to be able to quickly get a good representative product to their editor/news team, etc. On-Board Limiter Built into the analog stage, the Limiter helps deliver a stable and reliable recording free of clipped noise from sudden input surges. Built-In Nondirectional Stereo Microphones The R-4's omnidirectional, back electret condenser microphones offer superb transient characteristics and vibration resistance. Pre-Recording Function When the REC button is pressed, the current material is appended to a buffer that contains recorded material from a few seconds earlier. This helps prevent missed recording opportunities or sound bites at the beginning of a recording. In addition, the R-4 also provides five high-quality effects. The R-4 lets you tailor the sound during both recording and playback. L Terminal for Linking a Digital Video Camera The R-4's L terminal lets you connect a similarly equipped digital video camera to synchronize the camera start/stop while R-4 is recording. Counting the camera's two channels, this configuration gives you a total of six audio channels - a wealth of audio data to get creative with. Index Any Point Instantly Press the mark button anytime during recording or playback to mark that point for easy, instant indexing later. With the A-B repeat function you can set two points and repeatedly play back the material between them. USB 2.0 Terminal Provides a High-Speed Computer Data Link The USB 2.0 high-speed mode transfers data about 20 times faster than DAT. You can also use the R-4 as a 40GB storage device. Edit R-4 files directly from DAWs and other applications. EDIROL designs its USB devices in accordance with USB specifications and has passed all compatibility tests, which are continuously held and organized by USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF). Edirol R-4 Features: The R-4 brings you a new generation of portable recording. Enjoy superb sound quality and outstanding versatility in the field.

There is a lot about the R-4 to like. It's light, easy to use and has 4 input channels which is really nice. The level controls are easy to use and to monitor. There are caveats, however. I've been bu... read more [+]gged by the minor but unecessary hiss from the mic pre amps. I've learned that you don't want to use dynamic mics with this unit. The hiss is strongest with the Dynamic mics. You should go for Condenser Mics instead. The other thing, they have a compact flash card drive built in but you cannot record directly to compact flash. You can only record to the built-in hard drive and then transfer files to the flash card as a back up drive. That seems to defeat the purpose. Recording to a flash card reduces the risk of skipping and also uses less power. It was shortsighted move on Edirol's behalf. close [-]

I bought my R-4 from Sweetwater and used it the same day it was delivered to record my son’s band at a local club. I had a quick question for Edirol that first day and they got right back to me. You... read more [+] know that feeling when the guy on the phone from tech-support really uses the gear and likes it ? Well that is how the Edirol guys were. The R-4 is a snap to use in the field and beats the hell out of most digital multi-tracks with their 15 layers of menus and controls you try to see using a flash light in a dark club. I used the high sample rate and the audio was wonderful.March 24, 2006 Music Background: I also bought a Rode Stereo mic at the same time. There is no better way to record music in the field than the combo of this recorder and the Rode NT5 mic. Add a PA feed and an audience mic and the result is a solid recording with real live feel and stereo field. Leave the DAT at home and buy the Edirol R4 you won’t be disappointed. close [-] R4 : Worth the wait!
by Bill Levinson from New Jersey
My R4 just arrived and without any reference to the manual, I made a great live recording using 2 inputs from the board mix and 2 condensor mics (matched pair of Rode NT5's) for the room. I recor... read more [+]ded it as 2 stereo wav files at a bit depth/sampling rate of 16/44.1. The controls are completely intuitive. If you can work a 4 channel cassette recorder you can use this. I exported the data into Sonar 4, normalized it, EQ, and mixed it down to 2 track stereo. The result was smooth, seamless and right on the money. Most of all, it is EASY. Five stars for the R4! close [-]
