Experience precise audio clarity with a wider dynamic range when using the higher bit and sample rates that the R-09HR offers. The R-09HR supports up to 24-bit/96kHz linear PCM recording. I.A.R.C. (Isolated Adaptive Recording Circuit) is a dedicated analog circuit optimized for recording with the R-09HR's onboard A/D converter. The I.A.R.C. also contributes to high-quality, low-noise, and space-friendly MP3 recording with the R-09HR.

You don't need to lug external gear to get a great recording with the R-09HR. A stereo microphone is built right into the unit, complete with a dedicated analog input control, mono/stereo selector, low-cut filter, limiter/AGC (Auto Gain Control), and gain boost. The onboard electret condenser microphone elements are ultra-sensitive and capture three-dimensional sound naturally and accurately. External microphones can also be used with the R-09HR's 1/8" stereo mic input.

Easily audition the recorded sounds immediately after recording without headphones, thanks to the built-in speaker. Use the included wireless remote control to manage transport functions, recording start, and input level control from a distance. This allows the R-09HR to be placed in exactly the right position for recording, and allows for quick and easy hands-free operation.

Connect the R-09HR to computers via USB for importing/exporting audio files. It supports USB 2.0 mass storage so file transfers are quick and convenient. Included with the R-09HR is Cakewalk's pyro Audio Creator LE software &mdash: perfect for WAV/MP3 audio file editing.

excellent product

I could not be more pleased with the Edirol R-09. This is very, very, very well engineered product -- both as to quality and as to usability (user-friendly). Even the manuals (you get two, a longer on... read more [+]e and a shorter "practical" guide) are actually written and designed well -- I'm the kinda guy who is not a technical whiz and sometimes get reduced to tears reading some tech manual. Not the case here. No tears, all smiles.

The built-in microphone with this device is just unbelievably superior to those in prior devices I've used. (Note: it IS omnidirectional, so if you need a directional mic, you'll want to buy that as an accessional).

The thing works like a dream. The on-screen display is actually viewable by persons with normal eyesight. The on-screen menu is sensibly organized and easy to navigate.

The only negative for me was that the supplied CD-R containing a third party audio editing program would not load in my computer. However, that was just a freebie, so no big deal. There are plenty of excellent audio editing programs available for download, both paid and shareware.

If you are looking for an affordable, high-quality, very portable digital recorder for any type of sound (spoken word, singing, band practice, outdoor nature sounds, whatever!!), look no further than the Edirol R-09. close [-]

Great for recording rehearsals!!

I've bought this to record my band's rehearsals and I must say the recording quality is really impressive! At first I thought the remote control was just useless just to find out later that it is one ... read more [+]the best things of the R09 HR. Being able to split files as you go and not having to touch the unit is a blessing - this guy picks up every tiny sound so you will not want to mess with it during recording sessions. It is also very well constructed, menu is pretty straightforward... great job, Edirol/Roland!! close [-]

My best investment on field recording equipment

Was in the market for a portable field recorder with the intent on capturing my band's rehearsals. After checking the stats of several units on-line and actually having access to one of the popular mo... read more [+]dels sold here, I decided to go with the recommendation of a colleague: The Edirol R-09HR. Just got the unit yesterday and immediately set it to work... even with the no frills setup I used to record my acoustic guitar, the results were nothing short of awesome.

Just set the recording mode (either WAV and MP3 at several bit rates), recording level, Limiter/AGC (if you need to use them - I didn't), put the R-09HR on a convenient location and using the remote control start up the recording session... that easy. Connecting the recorder to your PC via the USB cable will have it come as a freely accessible external drive.

Still I have to try capturing a live rock band, I really expect the results to be on par of what I got at my home office. I had tried recording my acoustic guitar through several high end microphones and the results, while good, always seemed to leave something "out" - not so with the R-09HR. The built in microphones are something to praise.

The unit is small, well built and its menu easy to navigate. I would have liked to see a built in mount stand - you have to buy it as an add-on accessory, but even with that slight 'omission', I have nothing but the 5 five starts rating on the R-09HR - it does what it's supposed to do (and that is to record) in a superb top notch way! close [-]

Edirol R-09 cautions:

by Alan S. from Alaska USA

The R0-9 (not the H model) does what it set out to do, and does it well.

I am sure that many of my suggestions (below)
could apply to the R-09H as well. That's why I'm writing ... read more [+]this.

First, make sure you get the latest firmware
download for the unit after you receive the unit.
Don't assume the unit you receive has the latest
firmwarealready installed.

Second, only use SD-HC memory cards. The Edirol
product info and Sweetwater suggest SD cards will work for this unit, but don't buy any memory card unless it says SD-HC (high capacity).

Third, only use lithium ion batteries. The old
energizers don't last long enough for me to
risk them a live concert recording lasting
more than an hour.

Fourth, when setting for a long session, always
engage the HOLD button after starting the recording.
This will prevent the unit from shutting down
during a period of silence.

Fifth, the looping function is slightly
buggy on the R0-9. Maybe Roland will fix it
with future firmware revisions.

Don't get me wrong. All high tech equipment
has quirks, especially Roland stuff. I love
the R0-9 unit and have worked with it more than a year. You just have to learn its personality! close [-]

I currently own the original R-09. I thought to myself "How in the world is Edirol going to outdo themselves this time?" Sure enough, they have! If you're looking for a high-quality pocket recorder, check out the new R-09HR.
