Sweetwater Advice

Ryan Darmos
The Alesis Q49 is a USB-powered MIDI keyboard that has quickly become an important part of my studio. I depend on it for all my virtual instrument needs from piano and synths to acoustic drum software. It's extremely responsive and as simple as plugging in and playing!

can't beat it for the price

This is exactly what I was looking for. A no frills straight forward midi controller. I tried more costly models, the action seemed stiff to me. I like the action on this one. I wanted the 25 key model, but picked this up on a "black friday" sale for $50 which was even sweeter. It does everything I need and want.
One thing, my DAW program didn't auto find or offer it as an option for midi control. I'm not savvy enough to know if this is a problem in the DAW or in the model. I selected another Alesis product (photon x25) as the controller and everything works fine.

For the sale price of 1/4 regular price this light little keyboard pops on and off my desk very easily. For entry into my DAW Logic used with my Mac Pro it is plug and play simple as can be. No drivers no nothing, it just works. The feel of the keys are pretty good given I normally use keyboards in the 4K+ range. The mod and pitch wheels have a delicious amount of resistance that some might find a little too much. Trust me you will get used to it. Wonderful. The octave keys work perfectly and intuitively. I have not used the data entry slider which again feels nice when moving it. It is worth the 200 dollar price tag, BUY THIS at 50, it even has MIDI out if you want organ style keys to play the sounds from your fully weighted main axe.

Good basic controller

I needed a basic keyboard controller to add sounds to my recorded tracks. I don't need a lot of extra features to clutter things up. This fits the bill nicely. Simple, easy to use, and does what it's supposed to.

Great buy

If you're looking for a small MIDI controller with plenty of features, this is a good value. The USB interface works seamlessly with my Mac. The unit is really portable. The portamento and pitch wheels are really handy. The only minor issue is that the keys feel a bit squishy and cheap. But it's an acceptable trade-off.
