M-Audio Prokeys 88SX

by Kevin B. Selby from Tri-Cities, WA

Music Background: Semi-pro gigging musician
I am a semi-pro, gigging musician. I was sick of sloppily playing on 76 key lightweight keyboards (Yamaha DGX-305) as well as heavy 88-key fully weighted keyboards (Korg N1) (my hands get fatigued aft... read more [+]er 3 hours). I was also tired of lugging a laptop to gigs just to get decent bread and butter sounds (acoustic piano, Rhodes, Wurly, Hammond B3). I purchased the 88SX and love it. The sounds, while certainly not as high quality as most of the standard software libraries available, are very very good for typical gigs playing standard genres (rock, jazz, 70s, blues). I ran the Prokeys 88SX through a Roland RT-20 Rotary speaker simulator and the Prokeys organ absolutely SCREAMS. To listen to the Prokeys 88SX at a live gig, go to bajabluesband.com, click on the Gigs link, scroll down, click on the Listen link for Fri., July 13, 2007 - Bonefish Grill. The Prokeys 88SX was also used at the July 14, 2007 gig. Mine was recently stolen and I just bought another. Light as a feather, great price. The Wurly sample is worthy of doing some Supertramp tunes. Rhodes is good and the two acoustic pianos are plenty fine for live work. close [-]

Ok....but below expectations

I am a professional bass player. I was looking to a decent keyboard for piano study and composition purposes. M-audio had always great products and an excellent quality-price relationship. Well I'm no... read more [+]t so sure this time. I got this one online without trying it because I couldn't find one on a music store. Probably I wouldn't buy it if I had try it.
This keyboard replaces my old keystation 61 that had no sounds onboard. The look and feel is better on the keystation, this one looks cheap.
There is a lot of space in between the black and white keys that I only see as a dust and dirt magnet. (specially overtime). The action feels unnatural, and could be better for a semi-weighted. and the sounds..I am not convinced and prefer to play sounds from the computer.
Aside from the extended range, and the onboard sounds that allow me to play without the computer. My experience is better with the keystation. I should have tried the more expensive version. I own other M-audio products and view of the brand was always excellent, now that had change a bit. close [-]

I was looking for a midi controller to use live with my Motif ES rack. However, the feel of this ProKeys 88 keyboard was very uncomfortable. The keys felt like they were pushing back at your fingers. ... read more [+]I sold it and the rack because I just couldn't get use to the keys' feel. I'm back playing my much heavier 76 Keys Motif ES. I suggest passing this one up unless you can adjust to feel. close [-]
