I bought my first Powercore X8 Sonnox Edition a little over a year ago. I use an Apogeee Ensemble DA converter and initally tried to share the Firewire bus between the Ensemble and the PowerCore - do... read more [+]n't try it - it won't work. Firewire doesn't like to split bandwidth between components so I spent an extra $100 bucks and installed a new Firewire bus. Bingo - haven't had a problem since.
May 18, 2009 Music Background: Former Musician turned Recording Engineer As for the PowerCore and the available plugs - they're awesome. I use (overuse) the Tube Tech CL1B emulation on almost every track and it splits mastering duty with my Sony Oxford Dynamics plug. The VSS3 Stereo Source reverb from the System 6000 is the best reverb plug that I have ever heard - strap the VSS3 across a bus or 2 and magic happens. The NonLin 2Reverb is a little different but it's an oustanding vocal tool. But, whatd'ya expect - TC is synonomous with reverb and here it's obvious. If all you do is use the VSS3 reverb, this thing will pay for itself. The bundled plugs are okay - the the TC Channel Strip, 24/7 compressor, MegaReverb, Fabrik R and Tubifex amp sim get regular consideration but the real magic is in most of the aftermarket stuff. I have the Harmony 4 plug, the CL1B, Voice Modeler (also awesome), Sonnox Inflator, Sonnox EQ and Sonnox Dynamics and use each of them on almost every project I work on. I also have the MD3 mastering plug that came as a trial but after much experimentation, I prefer chaining up the Sonnox plugs rather than using the MD3 - and that is saying alot. Do yourself a favor and give the Sonnox stuff a serious look. As for the PowerCore itself, it's stable,reliable and powerful enough for most projects. On the rare occasion when I have run our of processing power, I can usually neaten things up enough to free up some processing power. I like mine so much, I just a bought a second one for additional horsepower. I also have a UAD-2 Nevana but since it's so new, I'll reserve comment for a month or two while I work both systems side by side. However, I will say that the PowerCore plugs seem to have a little more complexity and less vintage vibe. The PowerCore plugs are considerably more expensive but I'm starting to believe it's more of a "you get what you pay for" situation. I would certainly buy my PowerCore again and look forward to more third party plugs but, especially, wearing out the ones I have! close [-]
