perfect for my needs
by Eric from Baltimore, MD, June 2008
Music Background: midi, synths, sampling, etc...
This unit actually takes very clean, above average recordings.
You can pull it out of your shirt pocket, turn it on, and start recording in about 5 seconds. That's ideal for me since I like recording random sounds that I stumble upon like the truck that picks up the dumpster, an arguing couple, people singing at the bus stop, etc.
It charges quickly and easily via USB. Once it's plugged in my Mac, up pops the drive icon and I can put them anywhere I want. So simple. The included software is enough to process and sequence your audio. If you need more you probably already have more.
The only real con I've experienced so far is the lack of a meter while recording. When you want to record, you press record and are in standby mode. In standby mode you can adjust the gain (with a meter) and place the mic, etc. When you press record again, the unit starts recording, but the meter goes away. You're only left with a peak indicator. You can still adjust the gain but a meter in record mode should be there.
The carrying case is very nice and will (I think) absorb a modest drop. It also has a mount for a stand.
I'm very happy with this purchase. The unit does what's promised and I think the price is right.
Great unit at great price
by Keys from Berkeley, CA, June 2008
Music Background: Pro Musician/Teacher
Pros: Way small, easy to use, great price, wonderful little piece.
Cons: Only 2GB of memory, which would be plenty for a better mp3 compression setting, but the highest quality mp3 setting is an unlistenable 128kbps. Seriously? Three hours of recording on PCM (wav) mode, then a jump to 33 hours on the next highest quality setting (128 mp3). My fingers are crossed for a firmware update (at least 160kbps, please!!). Also, it's not the quietest device I've ever heard. For low-intensity recording, expect an audible hum to work its way in. Aux mic might solve this. But I love this little thing. I take it everywhere, and the battery lasts forever (and charges in 90 mins via USB).
Simple and Good Sounding
by Bruce Maclean from Cape Cod, June 2008
Music Background: Studio Owner, Cape Cod Legend, Keeper of the Rockabilly Flame
Was a little concerned at first about the sturdiness of the unit. It almost seems like something you'd get out of a gum machine, but it sounds great, it's easy,
and there are no extra cards, adapters or power supply involved. The fact that you
insert the unit itself into your USB port is brilliant.(It charges the battery through the USB port as well.) Love that the manual is located on the internal flash drive.
Really easy straightforward interface
