From Our Research Team:

Tons of tones!

For guitarists and bassists, the POD X3 Pro puts a staggering amount of sonic firepower at your fingertips. Packing spot-on models of an insane amount of classic and modern gear, the POD X3 Pro is perfect for any gigging or studio-bound guitarist or bassist. Vocalists can tap into modeled preamps from heavyweights such as Neve and API, while instrumentalists have access to names such as Ampeg, Fender, and Marshall, just to name a few. You can easily connect the POD X3 Pro to any recording or live sound rig.

Line 6 POD X3 Pro at a Glance:
  • Dual Tone processing
  • Live
  • In the studio

Dual Tone processing
POD X3 Pro is the powerful Dual Tone processor that comes fully loaded with amp and effect models for recording guitar, bass and vocals. In addition, a comprehensive array of inputs and outputs provide seamless integration into professional recording and performance rigs. Split your single-input guitar or bass signal through two different amp and effect chains simultaneously to create gorgeous new hybrids, or use its dual inputs to individually process two instruments-a microphone and a guitar, for example-at the same time.

Live
Try to picture this: a pedal board that's 30-feet long, with close to a hundred of the all-time greatest stompboxes (in pristine condition!), along with an effects rack that houses top-notch outboard compressors, reverbs, EQs and vintage preamps. And imagine that you could play and record through this uber-board with no noise at all, only one power supply and only a couple of knobs and switches to control the entire thing. Singers can run their studio microphone into the XLR input and take advantage of the warm and rich suite of mic preamp and compressor models provided by POD X3 Pro. Perform live using POD X3 Dual Tone processing and turn your POD X3 Pro into both a vocal processor/preamp (via XLR input) and a guitar amp modeler/effector (via 1/4" input), and simply send a single stereo pair to the house as you sing and play your sensitive heart out!

In the studio
POD X3 Pro isn't simply the most full-featured amp and effect modeler in the world. It's also a USB 2.0-based multi-channel digital recording interface, boasting top-tier specs like 24-bit studio-quality A/D and D/A converters, and 32-bit floating-point processing for sharp, clear audio imaging. Over USB, you've got the ability to record any or all of 8 different signals running through the POD X3 Pro. The 1/4" and XLR inputs can be used to simultaneously record two individual instruments or microphones to separate tracks in your DAW, each in stereo and each with the option of recording the dry mono signal at the same time. (This is perfect for going back after you've recorded a track and adding a little magic with the included plug-in.) In addition to the dual stereo and mono options, there's also a stereo blend being sent down to your DAW that matches exactly the blend coming out of the stereo 1/4" outs.

Computer-based studios will want to exploit the USB 2.0 connectivity provided by POD X3 Pro for multi-channel recording as well as its S/PDIF or AES/EBU Stereo Digital Audio I/O for sending a direct digital signal to their DAWs. For additional recording and processing flexibility, POD X3 Pro also includes software plug-in functionality for integration with DAW recording applications.

Hit the Ball ot of the Park

I have been a protagionist of Line 6 products for years now. I have a top 10 s**t list on the wall next to my main mixing desk of top ten manufacturers that made my special affection list, and Line 6... read more [+] has always been up there hovering with Digidesign and Mackie and Waves and Presonus among six others. Line 6 has sadly, to the chagrin of the others still there competing for first place, finally come off the list and here’s why. Their early generation stuff just mushed bigtime out live, and even the later Vetta hot rod stuff just never really nailed the tones to wit. Even their modular four button floor items have been substandard yet everybody loves them on their floorboards. The PODI and POD II and POD X family also fall in this joyless short - just short of the mark category but everybody loved them because they looked like oversized red-kidneybeans and sounded like crap? And enters the X3 PRO into the fray.

I am speaking exclusively for the X3 PRO and nothing else. It is a different creature altogether. Line 6 has definitely won my vote on this technology with the ability to morph or rather overlay two separate models. With the ability to "Monkey" presets from their Website that gives the unit the open-ended architecture for preset, or software, or firmware upgrades and sundry user downloads just like for the desk items like guitarport etc. And if you buy the Amp Farm it is well worth it in spades! In fact I cannot fathom how you will be able to live without it. No Waves dongles hanging off your computer. No proprietary guitar interface box to make the software work either. Just the whole stand-alone enchilada in a professional built like a tank rack mountable monster, and I mean freaking monster rack unit! Its looks sexy too mon!

Please understand, I am an all analog guy from the 70s, and play plexi stacks live exclusively since the early years, and nothing I have ever found has even come close. And if you think that Eric Johnson is anal about his tone and needs help, then he’d better pull a ticket and just have a seat. This is really a first. I ran this thru my Marshall dual EL34 amps into Marshall Cabs and it is so blind test dramatically close to my four input handwired 70s Plexi 50 PTP heads and 70s Plexi 100 PTP heads that mu head is spinning. Even the guitar volume control cleans up playing live.

The addition of the POD Farm pro audio preamp and compressor/limiter models, as well as the bass models is a genuine plus for those who cannot afford a real Neve 1073 or API 3124 among other outboard high dollar cost models desiring to use this as an outboard VST plug "high quality studio IO/ PREAMP /FX box" during tracking or mixing tracks. The reverbs, delys and other efx are very very good.

If you run this thru EL34 power amps as I do, you get the true British sweet output stage midrange. Or you can use Mesa or other 6L6 based power amps for more American output stage depth, or MOSVALE power amps for the tighter guitar sounds and especially on bass guitar.

Every pro audio studio should have at least one of these in the guitar and bass racks respectively. I have even added a third running everything out of the Keyboard synth submixer thru it as well. It is so very nice to be able to couple a Bogner Uberschall model with a Plexi, or with a Deizel, or a Recto model, or a 5150 for example, and the same with the cleans, like marrying a Twin with a JC120 or some other boutique clean model. The Line 6 high gain models are really OTT and cover so much territory you will never run out of sounds to inspire as well as dial up to please any producer anywhere on this planet anyway.

The speaker models are fine, and even though I still prefer to push air thru the appropriate cabs matched with the appropriate modeled heads with the appropriate front end mics capturing the source? you can still go direct to tape. But how many can afford a couple of Royer 121s, plus 421s, plus C451Bs, plus SM57As, plus RE20s, plus U87s, and on top of that a Bogner 4x12 G12-25, Bogner 4x12 12-30V, Marshall 4x12 1960 G12-75, Mesa 4x12 G12-30V Recto Cab, and an assortment of Avatar 2x12 and 4x12 Eminence flat speakers, and some Alnico Golds? Hmmmm? Yup, data's right.

Even the mic inputs at the front are a nice addition, and the routing on the back will get any job done you have to link to. Finally, even for studio use I would buy a Long Board Controller for each X3 PRO. It is a very practical tool to have by your feet during playing or mixing behind a desk. Even bypassing the preamps and programming patches for the pedal to be used as a midi cc controller for wet effects on reverbs, delays, pitch shifting, detuning, flangers, phasers, reasonators, synths, rotary, vibrato, and whatever else and/or general wetness-dryness ratio in realtime on such. Very nice keeping the hands free to do everything else.

A lot of folks know how affectionate I am of the Yamaha n12, and I would venture to say that a lot of studios worldwide will be reduced to a pair or three n12s and a couple to half a dozen X3 PROs and the sky is the limit for live band performance as well as recording 24 tracks of 24/88.2 or 24/96 professional mixes with no other plugs or outboard or anything else required. You’ll just need a Korg MR2000S for the final master at 1 Bit for the best audio out there. You even have the analog to digital conversion capability of this box that can be configured in so many ways. Heck you buy six of these and a laptop and a handful of decent mics (even the short list above and nothing else could cut a remarkable record) and you have a complete recording studio and can track a live band in realtime without ever to having to buy another piece of pro audio outboard again LOL. Section 6-3 of the manual describes output modes for Studio and Live fine tweaking, and another section describes running dry and wet out of separate outputs. The IO capabilities are fabulous. And all for $699+ the $399.00 cost of the FBV longboard? Hello? No brainer! Fuggedaboudit!

And for those who want maximum studio ergonomics, and prefer just to have two racks, then Steinberg MR816CSX in lieu of the n12 with all the built sweet bells and whistles (REV-X, morph comp, very nice EQ the same as the n12 has but without the n12 faders of course) for a max of 3 units stacked for a total of 48 channels at 24/44.1/48 or 24 channels max at 24/88.2/96 firewire duplex live monitoring; and a separate rack for the 3 to 6 stacked Line POD X3 PROs adding all that IO power as well as live realtime VST outboard power. Wow! Powerful stuff folks. Powerful stuff!!!!!

Well everybody moves up a slot on my beloved s**t list. Darned, now I have to fill the bottom empty slot with a new candidate. Hmmm, lets see who’s next? All I can say is well done Line 6. IMO you've finally turned the corner with a winner. Onward Silver Surfers - close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

This has to be the coolest POD yet. All the features of the X3, plus phantom power on the two mic pres. I would love to have one these in my rack - it would replace so many things and add an exponential amount of gear I don't own. It can operate as your main interface, your mic pre, your guitar FX, guitar amps, bass amps, bass FX, and a combination of two amps together at one time (bass or guitar). This would also be excellent for a live rig in combination with a Line 6 FBV Deluxe or FBV Short Board. Great tones, amazing versatility and something for your friends to drool over.

Almost too much!!!

There are soo many amp sounds in this thing, it is almost too much too handle. You can spend 1 month just trying to pick a clean sound. The compressor is the bomb on this thing. Will put that punch in... read more [+] your heavy sounds right in your face! The distortion amps are good. Like I said, it will take 1 month to choose, and tweek one. But with all the options you can get get what your looking for.
One thing that suprised me was how good the Mic Pre's sounded. The Vintage uk ( modeled after the neve ) Does rival my Universal audio la-610 mic pre. I ran one of my condenser mic's through it. Actually does give you that tube harmonic distortion detail, that mic preamps are supposed to do. I run it into my board via the digital Coax cable.
The gearbox program makes it easier to dial in your sounds useing your computer to control the unit.
(cons) there is not much of a midi control section.
When I go usb into my computer, and select the podx3 pro , as my sound card like it instructs you to, in order to get multiple outs into your daw. It will crash your computer. Im useing Nuendo.
But if it did work, u could record duel tone L&R out, plus dry. 8 channel's at one time.
The fvb foot controller has a bunch of buttons that don't apply to anything on the Podx3 pro. Like 2 stomp pedals, 1 amp pedal, 1 tremelo pedal. And has no way to switch between tones. (amp tones) That is
lame!!!
Im not soo sure this unit is for everyone. If you wanna just plug your guitar in and play, you wont be happy. You'll spend more time dialing than playing.
I would look at the roland gt rack unit as a alternative, I have the roland cube amp, and you just plug into it, and it sounds amazing.
