ReviewsPLG 150 DR Board
by John from Dallas, TX
Just got this board and installed it into a Motif ES 8. I've learned the hardway not to expect much from expansion boards in general (used most of the JV-80 and SRX boards for Roland). The Moti... read more [+]f sounds are very clean and processing is held to a minimum. The board says "live room" sounds and Yamaha stays true to that description.
December 1, 2004 Music Background: As a stand alone board, I'd give it a "B". The kicks all sound like they came from the save 5 or 6 different source samples. And I'll like to see more multi-sampling on all the sounds. When mixed with the Motif ES 8, then board gets at "A" - it offers alot of sounds to fill out the existing ROM sounds. For example, the Motif ES 8 has a jazz drum kit - but no brushes...!.... How stupid... Anyway, the DR board has some brushed and dragged snare samples. So now I'll add those kit sounds to the Jazz kit in the ES and Jazz kit as a whole will be 10x better. I'm sure the patterns are good, but I haven't loaded those yet. More patterns is always a good thing! The sound quality of the board is very good. Clean and 64 notes of polophony. I had the SRX Drums card in a XV-5080 - that expansion card was among the worst I've ever had. This card is 100x better. If you like the SRX board, then this card is sooo much better. If you're used to working with a large sample library from CD Rom, this board will have 90% of the stock sounds that you need. But if you want really specialized sounds (like multi-sampled snares, brush kits, etc.,) you'll still be using the CD Rom library. Finally, don't underestimate the value of 64 notes of extra polophony. If you're doing very large compositions all in one pass, then 64 more notes is a very welcome addition! close [-] |
