I have used many field recorders including the Nagra, Zoom H4, PCM-D50 and the Sound Devices 702. The PCM-D1 is in a class by it's self. The microphone pre-amps are very quiet. The built in mics are outstanding. The controls & menus are direct and functional. The build quality is outstanding. With the addition of the Sony XLR adapter... I would compare the pre-amp quality to the Sound Devices 702. Not quite up to the 702 but close. But the 702 is a lot bigger and it does not have mics that are suitable for making high quality recordings. I really can't say enough GOOD things about the PCM-D1. If you are looking for an inexpensive recorder with a lot of bells & whistles look at a Zoom H4. If you want to record QUALITY sound... I can highly recommend this unit.
