PA Series: Powerful Stewart Amps! The PA-100B boasts a radical departure from conventional power supply design: the High Frequency Switch Mode Power Supply. Occupying just 1/2 rack space, these amps pack pounds of power into a small package! Other amps use conventional supplies, operating at 60Hz (standard line frequency), recharge only 120 times per second, and require large storage capacitors and transformers to supply energy between cycles when power is not available from the wall. The power supply must act as a local reservoir of power from which the amplifier circuits can draw. This storage function is responsible for much of the bulk, weight, and cost of traditional power amplifiers. The new high-speed power supply design in the PA-100B allows for a significant reduction in all these problems, without a compromise in output power or sound quality.
