ReviewsGreat Digital Piano

I got this because I needed JUST a portable piano for mostly church event gigs. This price is unmatched for the product if you need mainly a classic piano sound. I have used the electric piano patch... read more [+]es also but only sparingly and the electric patches along with the organ and other features are not a reason to buy this particular piano. They are adequate but not for my taste. But if you need a rock solid feel and great piano tone, this is a great buy. I play pretty hard and the feel of this piano is very very nice. close [-]

For the money there is probably no better choice than the P-85 if you only need a piano sound, but I still have a few nits.June 3, 2009 Music Background: Musician/Songwriter The sound is very good for this price range, but sounds a bit... read more [+] muddy and artificial around middle C. My other piano is a Kurzweil, so maybe I'm just spoiled. The Yamaha is less harsh than the Kurzweil and might be better in a live band situation, but it doesn't sound as realistic to me. Nevertheless, the P-85 cost me less than $600 so I suppose I can't gripe there. Actually, Yamaha acoustic pianos can sound a bit muddy to me as well (compared to bright pianos like Steinways) so probably they're pretty close to their own acoustic pianos. The action is also close to a Yamaha acoustic piano, which is to say a bit heavy. I prefer a slightly lighter action. The fact that we can even compare a $600 digital keyboard to a $15,000 grand is saying something though! I wish they would include a decent Wurlitzer electric piano and a B-3 style organ sound instead of the pipe organ and vibes. When was the last time you used either of these sounds on any keyboard? A 76-key version would be real nice. The top octave is worthless for anything but classical music, so why not make a lighter, more compact version for the rest of us? I'd gladly trade the top octave for a couple of worthwhile sounds like the Wurli or the B3. close [-] Yamaha P85
