Small-diaphragm Condenser Drum Mic with Built-In Gooseneck and Clamp

The Beyerdynamic Opus 88 condenser microphone was made for miking toms and snare drums. The Opus 88's built-in clamp mounts easily to rims, and is equipped with an integrated preamp. The Opus 88's capsule is mounted on a short gooseneck that allows optimum positioning above the head without interfering with stick action.

Great little Mic

By Bill Georges from L.A. CA. on March 26, 2011 Music Background: Theatre Sound Designer, Pro Musician, Studio Owner

I have used this mic in my studio and for live events. It is very easy and a great time saver. You don't have to worry about hitting it because of how it clips on to the drum rim. The sound is great, very full and best of all needs little fuss. I do sometimes use a 20db pad in line for studio sessions to get more of the preamp flavor out of my API 3124 because the mic is pretty hot. I have 3 of them and will pick up one more from Kyle Manship my Sweetwater sales rep soon. For you drummers/recording engineers call Kyle if you have any questions. He is a drummer/recording engineer and very helpful.

Opus 88

By AC Buffalo from Los Angeles, CA on August 31, 2009 Music Background: Recording Engineer

I'm usually not a fan of clip on mics, for studio use, with exeption the opus 88. The sound is tight and crisp, and the clamp is strong and stays in place. I used rented a pair from a los angeles audio rentals place whom suggested I give these a shot.

Often when micing snare drums, placing microphones (usually sm57's) on snare, it difficult to get in there and place the top mic, moreover, placing the bottom mic where is even harder; if you think about the fact that you're going to need to reverse the phase. If the mics are not aligned, flipping the phase is going to cause more problems than what it offers.

Long Story Short: if you clip these mics one over the other, on the snare drum, your drum sound will be HUGE.

anyway, I always rent mics, before buying them.

one of the best tom mics out!!

By Jay from MI, usa on December 11, 2008 Music Background: musician, engineer and producer, over 25 yrs

I have 4 of these and have used them extensively in the studio and quite a few live shows as well. They are absolutely outstanding in either application. Nice full bottom without being boxy. Smooth top end too...not to clicky but nice and clear. Clamp securely to any drums I have encountered yet (pearl, Tama, Gretsch, DW). I do still prefer the Opus 87 or sm 57 on snare though. Again, they are the whip for toms! Get some.
