The 8-channel Octane preamp from M-Audio is specifically designed to enhance the front end of any multitrack digital recording system. Its award-winning M-Audio preamp technology delivers pristine digital signals to any Lightpipe-compatible devices such as hard disk recorders and digital mixers. Octane is ideal for miking drum kits or bands-and the two mic/instrument channels are great for guitar, bass and other instruments. M-S matrix encoding found in the Octane lets you employ stereo miking techniques previously available only in pro studios. Octane even has M-Audio analog preamp (direct) outs for each channel, making it the perfect upgrade for any digital audio interface or mixer. Word clock also means that you can sync multiple Octanes for as many channels as you need as your studio grows.

So you've decided to start a studio, or maybe create a studio away from the everyday grind. The Octane allows you to get wight quality preamps in one single package at a great price. There is also an ADAT optical output on the back of this unit which allows you to run in to any audio interface with lightpipe capabilities allowing you to stream eight digital channels directly into your software.

No better preamp for the dollar.

I have used it in both my home studio and live recording situations with no complaints yet and was really surprised at how great it worked when I recorded a 25 member choir. I have yet to find any major issue with this unit yet and don't expect to.
I know there are more expensive units out there that may be better(but not by much)but the value in this unit can't be beat. Simple design and controls, Solid construction and cool look also make this a winner. close [-]

When comparing recordings made with the Octane to ones I had d... read more [+]one with the Digi002's pre's the Octane sounds much better. It has far more clarity and presense. It really shines when I record drums. I think this is a great unit, especially for the price. I would consider comparing this unit to the new DigimaxFS. That wasn't out when I bought this and it would be worth comparing the two to see which one sounds better. close [-]
