Music Background:  dj

i purchase this mic like 3yrs ago confused at the time on which is a good mic to buy i took a chance, since then i have been using this mike to record vocals its clear clean sounding mic, it actually makes your vocals sound fat which is good i love it and i'll never get rid of it very very good investment trust me.

Solid Mic, Solid Sound, without the Boutique Price
by C. Portman from Houston, TX USA, October 2007
Music Background:  Recording Engineer, Producer, Studio Owner, Pro Musician—Live & Session.

This mic is probably impossible to beat regarding overall sound and build quality at anything remotely near this price range. It sounds 100% boutique, especially when combined with a boutique preamp.
I work fulltime in the music industry as both a music producer and a session drummer/guitarist...multi-instrumentalist. I do the drum work on most albums I produce.
I bought a pair of NT2As approximately one year ago to use for their versatility. I've used it on everything from drum overheads to acoustic guitars to percussion to male & female vocals. Yes, I did say female vocals. Another reviewer stated this is not a good mic for female vocalists. Well, generalizing a mic's use based on personal experience is not the most ideal approach. It should also be noted that a great studio staple like a Neumann U87 is NOT going to sound good on every female (or even male's) vocal. But for many it will sound perfect. The same goes for this mic. I've put it on female vocals and found it to be quite flattering. It's individual and changes client to client.

This is precisely why you HAVE to build a versatile mic locker for your clients. Unless you're like Tori Amos, with your own studio created only for yourself, then it's all about finding the best personal fit to make your personal recordings shine. I think of mikes much like tennis shoes. Not everyone is going to wear the same size or prefer the same brand. And that's because everyone has different feet just like everyone has different vocal characteristics.

So, for multiple clients (producers like me) you need variety. You need to invest your money in a product that's going to give back way more than what you put into it.
And I must say that variety starting with the MOST versatility at the BEST price for the BEST build quality and BEST sound in its class, is (dare I say) CRAZY to pass up.
Regarding RODE Microphones in general (of which I have collected way too many and need to sell some if anyone's interested), they are a phenomenal mic company. Chinese mic prices for boutique mic build & sound is almost too good to be true.
Admittedly, my preamps are all boutique—ADL 600s, Avalon 737sp's, Trident S20s, Focusrites, etc. And the combo of my RODE mic collection with these versatile pres sound as good as some of the U87s, 414s, Royers, and Blue mics I've recorded with in multi-million dollar studios. So, take it from someone who knows. You can't go wrong with a RODE. And the NT2A is probably the best "first mic" for anyone wanting to start their own project studio. If you want a boutique sounding valve for just a bit more cash, give the NTK a closer look.

  Great For Vocals
by Gary Arnold from Sydney Australia, July 2007
Music Background:  Producer - Wavtracks Royalty Free Music - http://www.wavtracks.com

This an incredible mic especially for the price. I was blown away with in combination with even a cheap preamp. Not renowned for a great acoustic guitar sound but when i tested it it was actually very good. Very warm and silky. The pads and switches are a great help and it is a solid little aussie mic that will last forever. I use thing for so many different instruments it's ridiculous.

  AMAZING QUALITY
by Kris R. DeLaney from Florida, July 2007
Music Background:  HD Video & Field Sound Recording

Unlike many mics in its class, this unit is obviously NOT made in China! Its construction is superior, the mic is dead quiet, and the sound reproduction is super accurate. I don't think any company can beat Rode for quality and performance versus price.

Also, I spoke to Rode reps several times. Their availability, support, guarantee, and English could not be better.

The only two areas I see for improvement, are that the unit is a bit edgy for female vocals, and that the mic likes a lot of gain.

You WILL need a pop filter!

I will most certainly purchase other Rode mics.

  I love this condenser!!!
by Mark D from Boringtown, WV USA, February 2007
Music Background:  Student, Musician, Recording Hobbyist

This mic sounds great on vocals and acoustic guitar. It has a real natural flat sound and is very quiet internally. I use it with a blue tube pre amp and it sounds wonderful. The roll off switches on the mic are a great feature also. My sweetwater rep. Matt Bostater hooked me up with this great mic. Thanks Matt and Sweetwater!

Best sounding mic I've ever heard on my voice!
by Christopher Scott Hamilton from Monroe,Louisiana, February 2007
Music Background:  All of the above!

Had this mic, about a year now.I've used Neuman on my voice to no avail!Very flat response on the NT-2A.Add a tube pre amp,and there is really no equalizing needed. The pads on the front of the mic are very handy when recording yourself as I do.Don't have to run around to do this.

Like Melted Butter
by Lee Rothman from Salt Lake City, Utah, October 2005

Indeed having owned just about every premium mic out there over the last 15+ years, I got this one on a lark as my "premium" mic closet mic. I had a few doubts until I worked with it hooked up to my new Digital Workstation......noise? what noise, sound so neutral and yet sweet you can't possibly complain. Built like a flagship should be without that kind of premium pricing. This mic delivers for all purposes imaginable. You'll hear detail you didn't know was there, yet no harshness........yes just like melted butter.........

An example of everything that is right!
by Bob Manor from Madison, WI USA, September 2005

Rode got it right with this mike. Quiet, clean, silky smooth top and solid bottom, not "scooped out" in the middle like many Chinese condensers. An exremely high quality all purpose mike for guitar vocals, drum overheads etc. This mike does not lie- very neutral. I have an AKG C414uls and it sounds just like it. An excellent buy.
