The Enhanced Sound set of the ES 1,859 waveforms - the majority of them newly sampled specifically for the MOTIF ES series - provide the foundation for 1,024 outstanding normal voices plus 65 drum kits. There are even Mix Voices so you can edit and create your own Voices while listening to your songs and store them right along with the song data. The MOTIF ES delivers an extraordinary sonic depth and musical response. The range of sounds it produces is stunning - from the Emulative Sounds of acoustic piano and orchestra to the Extreme Synthesis of cutting-edge hiphop and electronica. You only have to hear the ES once to know this is the best sounding, most Evolved Synthesizer Yamaha has ever made.Keyboard Mega Voices A significant leap forward from simple single layer samples, "Keyboard Mega Voices" technology makes it possible to include all the nuances of an instrument's realtime performance. Imagine a guitar voice, for example, with hammer-ons, pull-offs, harmonics, slides, fret noises, and other elements of the "real thing" all accessible from the keyboard at the same time. Keyboard Mega Voice technology takes MOTIF ES guitar, bass, and other instrument voices to new expressive heights. Phrase Factory Much more than a simple arpeggiator, the MOTIF ES Phrase Factory offers unprecedented versatility for creating sequenced phrases. Use it with the drum kits to produce innovative rhythm patterns, or take advantage of its chord-recognition capabilities to generate pitched phrases using the normal voices. You have 1,787 preset arpeggiator phrases to start with - from standard synth arps to drum loops to natural-sounding acoustic-instrument grooves. ISS - Integrated Sampling Sequencer The Integrated Sampling Sequencer in the ES provides the seamless integration of MIDI and audio sample sequencing places the MOTIF ES synthesizers right on the leading edge of music production. Expressive Surface for Real Time Control For truly musical expression there's no substitute for realtime hands-on control. The MOTIF ES gives you four rotary controllers and four faders that can be assigned to control filters, volume, effects, envelops ... any of an extensive range of voice parameters. These same controls provide a digital mixer feel when mixing multiple sequenced parts. They can also be used as MIDI controllers to control external MIDI devices. Yamaha even added a ribbon controller for intimate fingertip voice control. Elegant System Integration with DAWs If you use a computer-based sequencer or DAW as part of your music production setup, with press of a button you can turn the MOTIF ES into a full function control surface that supports the same protocols as the new 01X Digital Mixing Studio. mLan, USB & More! When you want to move up to mLAN networking - Yamaha's high-performance music networking protocol - simply install the optional mLAN16E expansion board (available soon) in your MOTIF ES synthesizer and you're ready to network and share multiple ports of MIDI data and multiple channels of 24-bit/96 kHz audio data with other mLAN compatible devices or computers with 1394 Firewire connectors. The MOTIF ES synthesizers feature a USB "TO DEVICE" port that can be connected to a USB storage device such as hard disks, flash disks, or card memory readers for convenient, safe external storage of your samples, sequences, and other production data. A built-in SmartMedia slot accepts memory cards with capacities up to 128 megabytes for convenient external data storage. Modular Synthesis Plug-in System Right out of the box the MOTIF ES synthesizers are powerhouses of music production features and sounds. If you want additional capabilities, however, the Modular Synthesis Plug-in System lets you simply plug-in appropriate optional expansion boards. For analog-modeling synthesis there's the PLG150-AN, or for advanced 6-operator FM synthesis there's the PLG150-DX. The incredibly real sound of virtual analog synthesis is available via the PLG150-VL board, the PLG150-DR delivers outstanding AWM-generated drum sounds, choose the PLG150-PC for percussion, or install the PLG150-PF for outstanding piano sound. The MOTIF ES synthesizers have three expansion slots that can accommodate the extra features you need.

ReviewsA dream workstation keyboard for a true producer
by Andy Nguyen from Anaheim, CA USA
The MOTIF ES8 is a dream workstation keyboard. The reason why I said it is because I've been checking out all of the workstation keyboards for the true hammer-weighted action keys. Compare to other wo... read more [+]rkstation keyboards, the MOTIF ES8 is the one. When i play on it, I can feel not only the true touch of a luxurious piano but also I can feel the music and its meaning. However, many other worskstation keyboards also have the hammer-weighted action keys, but it's kind of fake because I think the materials are not as good as the MOTIF ES8. Hammerweighted action keys are not everything about MOTIF ES8. With a huge WAVE ROM, MOTIF ES8 brings the most beautiful variety load of sounds to the studio environment and no one can deny the technology of Mega Sounds because they are so realistic. Offering a very simple sequencing interface, the MOTIF ES8 helps many professional producers create beats easily. I made many beats on the MOTIF ES8 and the results come out beautiful. I totally recommend everyone to buy the MOTIF ES8 keyboard for its beautiful functions and its user-friendly. close [-]
September 20, 2006 Music Background: Recording Engineer, POP/R&B Producer, Piano/guitar/bass player. You won't be disappointed

If you can see your way to lug around this 88-key, 62 lb. monster, you will have one of the best sounding synths out there!December 28, 2006 Music Background: Hobbyist, Korg X3, Cubase, Halion VST, played live gigs When I was looking around for a weighted 88-key synth that ha... read more [+]d a great piano sound as well as versatile effects and sequencing I tried so many others---the Triton Extreme, the Roland Fantom, etc. While I still feel that the Triton has better pads and synths (more suited towards electronic music) what really won me over on the Yamaha was the *feel*. Whatever Yamaha did to the weighting system it just has a really responsive, solid feel but yet won't tire your hands out when you're doing those songs with repetitive hammering. I think you'll also be impressed with the guitar selection they loaded in---paired with the effects it really gives our lead guitarist competition. (Yes, it's still a keyboard, but for simple solos or appregios it's great.) Oh, it has some great woodwinds/brass. Where I think it falters a bit is on the synth sounds. True, you can probably do a lot with the effects to evoke some rich sounds out of it, but I found it hard to get really phat, warm tones out of it. It has a solid build but the wood panel on the bottom sort of scares me a little if it might break one day---I *have* lost screws from the bottom that just loosened up, but you can buy them at Home Depot. So, bottom line: great feel, awesome piano, great organic (guitar/woodwind/brass). OK sequencing, good effects. Lacking a bit on electronic sounds, and heavy as heck. Enjoy! close [-] inSync Review

Motif & Fantom comparison...

August 1, 2005 Music Background: The piano sounds on the new Fantom are different in that the low end is not over-powering. For those of you who play Korgs, you know that the low end can be wayyyy too much. Great piano sounds on both Fantom and Motif. The Motif piano sounds are very realistic - much better than the Korg factory sounds, and rather warm compared to the Fantom. Easily adjusted with EQ. The organ sounds on the Motif are awesome, but the 'Leslie' effect is lacking. The Fantom has a similar problem, with the rotary effect even worse. I'm sure you can tweak the rotary effect, but I've got a Clavia Nord Electro on the way, so why bother? The "bells and whistles" sounds are very good on the Motif. The guitar riffs and sounds are great, and you can tell a good bit of detail went into the sounds. The flute is amazing when compared to the other companies' sounds. Good low end on the synths, and the effects on the Motif are absolutely fabulous. If Yamaha has one strong point on this keyboard, it has to be effects. The Motif is not easy to get around on. It's almost caused me to sell it and get a 88-key Triton Extreme. However, I'm the type that when I buy something, I tend to hold on to it. Not the most user friendly keyboard. But of course, the sounds are great and the keyboard does do a lot. Just don't expect to plug and play with the sequencer. The Fantom is easier to maneuver, and of course has the full-color screen. I've only had the Fantom a couple of weeks, but it is much easier to maneuver. All of the sounds are high quality, but my beef is - again - the rotary simulator when playing organs. I'm a horn player originally, so I'm never gonna be happy with snyth horn parts, but things are getting better. Just a tip... If you layer your lower horn parts to track and place your live lead horn line on top, you can make the arrangement near perfect. I've heard numerous top 40 groups do this over the years. One thing I like about the Fantom - you can actually load a txt. file onto the keybaord. If you're a live player and have a lot of words or chord changes to remember, or even a song list, this could be an awesome help. I'm sure that over time, the other big keyboard makers will follow suit with better screens. The Motif is a great keyboard, and in the right hands is an awesome tool. Be prepared to read the manual. I will say it's rather easy to change the arpeggiated riffs on the Motif. I've had to hunt a little on the Fantom, but once found was easily adjusted. When my Nord Electro arrives, I'll have a Korg Karma, Motif ES8, and a Fantom X7. As I begin to compare the keyboards, I'll drop back by and give a further assessment. close [-] THE BEST

I now have had the motif, triton extreme, roland phantom and the motif es all in my studio at one point and time, not to knock the korg or roland but the motif es is a much better keyboard, true it... read more [+]039;s not the most user friendly one of em all but once you figure out the interface you can't compare the others to it. I wouldn't trade the motif es for 2 tritons and a few phantoms. Plus if you midi the motif with an akai mpc you have a producers dream at your finger tips. close [-]
