March 16, 2010 Music Background: Film production sound Fantastic little pre-amp

The Sound Devices MixPre is a handy tool for on-the-go audio.March 9, 2010 Music Background: Production and audio post for film/TV For smaller projects, it's perfect for run-and-gun with a single mic. For stereo recording, it's a solid two-channel pre-a... read more [+]mp. And if your field mixer needs an extra input, the MixPre is there to help. The MixPre has its limitations. Output is only at line-level, and input is only at mic-level. The meters are not nearly as sweet as those on the 302, 442, and 552, but they are reliable and have brightness settings for day or night viewing. Hard L-C-R pan switching isn't as useful as rotary pan control (you have to go to the 442 or 552 for that feature) but still offers a few choices in signal routing. The pre-amps are very good with tons of headroom. Powering a Rode NTG-3, I was able to get plenty of signal, little/no noise and didn't have to crank the input level to get what I wanted. The "unclippable," two-stage input limiting is also a lifesaver. Battery life is okay. I used Energizer E2 Lithiums on a recent project and got about three hours before having to change batteries, and +48v Phantom was running. The battery compartment is very easy to access, though, making battery changes quick. In all, this is a solid piece of gear. There are so many places where a basic, two-channel preamp is handy. The MixPre fits the bill. It's also perfect for boom ops, with a headphone return for monitoring from a remote mixer, recorder, or camera. close [-]
