Korg microSAMPLER Sampling Keyboard at a Glance:
  • Powerful fun
  • Sample the way you want
  • The sampling features you need
  • Pattern sequencer lets you perform with the microSAMPLER
  • Amazing effects
  • USB port and editor/librarian software

Powerful fun
The microSAMPLER is designed for performance — and it's a ton of fun to play! In addition to triggering samples as on a conventional pad-type sampler, you can also play the samples at different pitches in a musical fashion, and even resample the result. The controllers you need for an exciting performance are laid out on the panel for intuitive operation. The status of the samples assigned to each key (and the item being edited) is indicated by the lit state of the LEDs running along the top of the keyboard, ensuring excellent visibility even on stage.

The microSAMPLER features Korg's natural touch mini keyboard, so your get greatly enhanced playability and expressiveness. The touch has been improved so that rapid phrases can be played more easily. The box-shaped keys project a sense of quality, and also allow smoother glissandi.

Sample the way you want
Both line input and mic input are provided to allow a broad range of input sources including electronic musical instruments, CD, and voice. The microSAMPLER even includes a gooseneck microphone, so you can sample on the go! The microSAMPLER can run on batteries, so you can perform on the go - or capture samples anywhere. In addition, there's a resampling function that lets you play existing layered samples processed by an effect and played by the loop sequencer — and capture it all as a new sample.

When sampling, you can select One Shot, Gate, or Loop methods; this greatly enhances the realtime character of your performance. In addition, you can use two completely new sampling methods "Key Gate" and "Auto Next" to sample more efficiently and creatively than ever.

The sampling features you need
The microSAMPLER gives you a full complement of top-end sampling features, including 14-voice polyphony, reverse playback, editing operations such as Normalize and Truncate, and a Time Stretch feature that lets you change the tempo without affecting the pitch. Selectable sample rates of 48kHz, 24kHz, 12kHz down to 6kHz let you sample at rates beyond CD clarity or add in that Lo-Fi vintage vibe...yet the microSAMPLER is also incredibly easy to operate! Each bank contains 36 samples and sixteen patterns of sequence data; the microSAMPLER lets you store eight such banks in internal memory.

Pattern sequencer lets you perform with the microSAMPLER
The pattern sequencer uses an overdub operating style that lets you continually layer your performances. Switch between patterns during playback for seamless performances. Up to sixteen patterns (16,000 notes per pattern or a maximum 64,000) can be stored in each bank.

Amazing effects
Developed for Korg's KAOSS PAD series, the effect engine serves up a great selection of effects (very important when you're editing samples). The 21 effects include not only traditional delay and chorus, but also ring modulator and grain shifter, and even a Looper that's derived from the Loop Recording feature of the KAOSSILATOR Dynamic Phrase Synthesizer.

USB port and editor/librarian software
By using editor/librarian software for the microSAMPLER, you can manage a gigantic sample library that's all your own. You can back up sample data to your computer via USB, load samples into the microSAMPLER, and back up the sequence data. Importing and exporting of WAV/AIFF data on your computer is also supported.

Like all keys and gear hands on auditioning is best of course.
The drawback is unless you bring a friend who already owns one and is can operate its features you are at the mercy of sales staff... read more [+] who never have even read the manual and can do no more than demo presets.
Thanks to youtube now you can watch and hear someone who has mastered this deep powerfull baby show what you can do .
Go subscribe to 3sleeves's youtube channell ..he has posted a nice set of vids playing great music and better still a whole bunch of tutorials ..Korg thelmselves on their channel also have a bunch of tutorial vids that explain all....then decide..btw 3sleeves shows how easily you can via midi plug the MS into your favorite daw/pc running your favorite vst instruments..to play them from the ms keys and simultaneously live sample them into the ms sample banks to save and play anytime from the ms itself..a killer feature. close [-]

Excellent Workflow, great problem solver

The Good: I've seen mixed reviews of this unit, but after using it for a few months it has grown on me. It solves a lot of problems for me in terms of triggering samples live from pedalboards, and it... read more [+] allows me to whip up some cool intros with the pattern sequencer. The ability to bounce via resampling (w/effects) is huge, considering how easy it is. The workflow for all of this is simple -- I don't want to be a mouse jockey when setting things up. A refreshing departure from anything out there. In the studio it allows me to fly things into the DAW with ease and no latency.

The Bad: Unit is flimsy so you have to be gentle with it. You have to pay attention to gain staging a lot, and it does its own voodoo based on the gain of the samples already in the bank. Pitch bend and mod wheel would have been nice. It is by default "polite sounding" in terms of loudness, but you can work around that. Effects are above par. I've found they work best on resamples, and not in a main mix position (leave that to the DAW), YMMV.

There is no Ugly (except for those who don't like the cosmetics, I think it's OK, but then I really don't care what it looks like)

Overall excellent value for money, and I've found that is has long been a missing piece in my studio, even better live. close [-]

SO FAR SO GOOD THANKS TO SWEETWATER.

Music Background: EVERYTHING
Just got the unit. It sounds very pro in the sampling department. It comes with ROM presets to introduce one to the abilities of the machine. Korg also has 2 more sampled preset packs that can be down... read more [+]loaded from their web-site. Beware you can only load one at a time onto the machine.

The mic is really, really good and has great isolation.

There is some learning curve but there are many onboard features and actual physical writing on the panel that helps to assist in routing tasks. The lights across the board crucial to live performance.

Read the manual.......

This machine wears many hats in my mind. However it really shines as a sampler and sequencer. It can play instrument replicate sounds and they have a very realistic fidelity. The truncating is a little ruff at this point but it can be edited/ improved I am sure.

My unit has something rattling around inside next to the power input, USB, and MIDI area. I will be EYE BALLING that issue for a while. Other than that so far so good! I gave it 4 stars for that concern alone.

The build quality is delicate so be careful and buy a good protective case/bag.

Later for more features and ideas.

Also more later on the fantastic Sweetwater difference; for it is great on so many levels. I will devote an entire to review to those benefits alone. See everyone soon...

God Bless...
