From Our Research Team:

Audio Tracks Are Putty in Your Hands!

From the people who produce the astonishing Melodyne Studio Edition comes Melodyne cre8, a powerful pitch and time processing application for project studios. Melodyne cre8 allows you to change the musical parameters of voices or instruments without changing the character of the audio track!

Celemony Melodyne cre8 at a Glance:
  • Manipulate the pitch and rhythm of audio tracks
  • Easy time stretching, pitch shifting and formant correction
  • Detects pitches and displays them for you to edit
  • Just grab a note and move it!
  • Make changes on the fly!
  • Preserves phrasing of melodic lines
  • Timing changes are just as easy
  • Arrange your music as you always wanted to

Manipulate the pitch and rhythm of audio tracks
Melodyne cre8 is able to change the musical parameters of voices or instruments without any actual influence on the character of the recording. Melodyne detects the pitch and the rhythm, leaving you free to manipulate the audio material at will. Any changes you make are interpreted by the software in a musically intelligent manner and the results always sound natural. Working with Melodyne cre8 is as easy as editing notes with MIDI.

Easy time stretching, pitch shifting and formant correction
Pitch shifting and time stretching were awkward operations in the pre-Melodyne age, too problematical to even bother with unless things had gone badly wrong. In Melodyne cre8, they're a breeze! You can perform time stretching, pitch shifting or formant correction without even thinking; just grab the notes already recognized by the software and move them around in pitch or time and everything will sound as you would musically expect it to. Or you can move the tempo slider during playback, and Melodyne cre8 will make the music accelerate or slow down without this in any way affecting the pitch - just like an orchestra following the conductor's baton.

Detects pitches and displays them for you to edit
With Melodyne cre8 you can record single melody tracks like with any other hard disk recording software, or you can import them into your arrangement as audio files. It is not essential that the timing, pitch or musical scale of imported melodies match those of your current arrangement - it's easy for Melodyne cre8 to adapt them. If you want to edit a melody, just double-click on it and after a short pause (while the software detects the individual notes) Melodyne cre8's editor will open. The notes appear in their actual positions in terms of time and pitch, and you will also see the exact phrasing of a melody line.

Just grab a note and move it!
Melodyne cre8 lets you simply grab a note and move it to any pitch or time position you like. The transition between notes is handled at all times in a way that makes musical sense, and automatic formant correction always makes the moved note sound the way you expect it to. Detected melodies can be played back via MIDI, including all the controller data needed for an expressive performance - volume, pitch bend etc. The tone generation could be supplied by an external MIDI module or else by VST instruments hosted by Melodyne cre8. Naturally you can export your MIDI data as well.

Change music while it plays
All changes in Melodyne cre8 can be made on the fly even while the melody is running - you will hear your changes take effect as soon as you move the notes. You can also make the moved notes snap to the nearest semitone or to a defined musical scale, or even define a new scale for the entire melody or selected notes by clicking the scale selector buttons on the left hand side of the editor.

Preserves phrasing of melodic lines
When you make a change in Melodyne cre8, the phrasing inside a note, such as vibrato, will be kept - but you can also edit the phrasing by reducing or adding vibrato or changing the transition curve between notes. Extreme reduction would result in the unnatural 'straight pitch' that is a marked feature of many recent pop songs. Of course, you could copy and paste notes or melody lines to arrange them as a harmony choir. Formants can be adapted to emulate male or female voices and even convert a trumpet into a trombone.

Timing changes are just as easy
It's just as easy to change the timing of a note as its pitch with Melodyne cre8. Just grab it and move it to the desired position. Depending on which tool you choose, the notes following the moved note will be shortened or moved backwards or forwards in time. If you time-stretch a note, it isn't stretched uniformly after the crude fashion of rival software; instead, the attack remains unchanged, so consonants at the beginning of words do not lose their intelligibility and the characteristic starting transients and incidental noise that play a vital part in helping us to identify different instruments are preserved -the sound of the fingernails on a plucked string, for example. Should you wish to, of course, you could use Melodyne cre8 to change only the starting transients and not the note itself, to change staccato to legato or vice versa.

Arrange your music as you always wanted to
In Melodyne cre8's arrange window, all your melodies are displayed with all their notes. So you can see at a glance what's on a track without even listening. Here you can move tracks around, and copy or loop melodies. You can save detected melodies for re-use in another arrangement. Remember, it's easy to slot a new melody into an arrangement - even one with a different tempo, tonality or pitch. Melodyne cre8 will let you perform audio magic!

I use SONAR, which comes with a respectable pitch correction feature, so I was reluctant to buy something that duplicated functionality I already had. But so many folks on the SONAR forum raved about ... read more [+]Melodyne I took a chance on it.

And man, am I glad I did. This package is truly awesome. Not only is pitch correction easy, but the greatest advantage is the ease with which I can fix phrasing/timing issues with harmonies and double-tracked vocals. My singing needs all the help it can get, and Melodyne makes even my unsteady voice sound good.

One caveat, though: it's not exactly plug and play. Expect a learning curve and read the manual before you get frustrated. close [-]

Melodyne was recommended to me by several different audio pros, including the Pros at Sweetwater.

Melodyne has lived up to the promise! I was interested in several features, pitch corre... read more [+]ction, audio quantizing, audio to MIDI.

So far, so great! Pitch correction is great, and easy to use. The audio to MIDI function was easy, and very accurate. Haven't used the audio quantize feature yet, but that's coming soon.

And one feature I didn't count on was the amplitude edit feature. Very cool and easy to use!

Anyone who has tracks to edit, clean up, improve, whatever, Melodyne id the tool! close [-]

I am impressed

I stumbled upon Melodyne Uno while browsing online one day. I went to celemony's site and investigated further. Being a hobbyist for over 2 decades now and buying a lot of stuff over the years, few it... read more [+]ems stick to mind as "favorites". In recent years, Amplitube 2 blew my mind as a guitarist and I love it. Reason 4 is just the most amazing piece of synth/sampler software I have ever used. EZdrummer makes recording drums amazingly easy and since you can adjust the midi it doesn't "feel like cheating" by just using a loop. And speaking of loops there is Acid, can't imagine life without Sony Acid and Sony Soundforge to edit the final waves. FL Studio was always my fav for "bang for the buck" software. But I always lacked with vocals! The drum track rocked, my guitar sounded pro level, my synths were amazing, Acid and Soundforge allowed me to easily create like on a canvas with grid snapping LOL :P. But then there were my vocals, sounding thin, weak, out of tune, and unimpressive! I bought a Rode NT1-A mic which helped with the weak part. I learned to process with effects and eq for the thin part. But the out of tune and lame singing voice of mine seemed doomed. And then I bought this software! I am really impressed with this software. I bought the Cre8 version for the harmonies and 8 tracks, but in retrospect I may have been ok with the Uno version for my needs. The harmonies are cool, but not too much different sounding than some "harmony effects" that I have in other programs. And since I have Acid, having 8 tracks in Melodyne isn't really a benefit either as Acid is much more user friendly (to me anyway). Now before you think I am knocking this software, please know that I am not. You just have to realize what this software does. It is not going to take a lousy singer and make them sound great. It's strength is in having the ability to adjust every word that you sing, word by word. It will still be your voice, just your voice the best that it can be! The beauty of this software in my opinion isn't the initial pitch correction that it does for you, it is the ability to "play" with the vocal track and come up with some wonderfully "in-tune" sounding stuff with your own voice! You sing the song one way, and by the time you are done editing in Melodyne (moving the pitch of each word up and down, lengthening and shortening, dec/inc vibrato in the voice, etc.) you have something that you really like, something that is perfect to you, that you can be proud of as a vocal track of your voice. But at the same time, something completely different from what you first sang in some ways. Way better than anything you could have done without the software anyway. Now keep in mind that I am a "do everything myself" hobbyist. I compose, play guitar and sing, and record myself. So Melodyne to me is: record the vocal wave file in Acid or FL Studio like I normally would. Open Melodyne separately, and import the vocal wave into Melodyne. Work on the wave until it is how I like it, save it back to a wave file. And then reopen the new vocal track back into Acid or FL Studio on a separate track and use it instead of my original vocal file. You can use Melodyne as a VST plugin, but honestly I haven't even tried this yet as working the other way just seems to be easier for me right now. I'm still getting my feet wet with the software. But Melodyne is now up there with my favorite pieces of software of all time. A really unique approach to vocal editing that is very useful and a lot of fun to play with as well in my opinion. I am also going to use Melodyne to change my guitar tracks (today actually after I write this review :P), it makes me look forward to playing with my music gear again, and that is what it is all about to me as a hobbyist anyway :). I give it 4.5 stars, almost perfect :). close [-]

It's a Hit...

I bought Melodyne Cre8 to use on a specific project featuring a songwriter who is a little pitch challenged. For that purpose it has been outstanding, very easy to use - with this particular singer t... read more [+]he ability to ease off the vibrato in places is especially welcome. I've also used it to generate the occasional harmony part, which works well enough. When used as a tuning tool, it is extremely transparent, I can't hear any artifacts at all, just a more in-tune vocal.

The other reason I bought it is it's advertised ability to quantize audio. In this respect it delivers as well; so far I've used it to salvage several otherwise unusable drum tracks.

Another interesting feature is audio-to-midi. I've had mixed results with that. When I used it on a kick drum track, for example, it generated midi notes of a bunch of different pitches, and I had to manually put them all on the same note. There may be a way to keep this from happening, possibly by filtering the source audio, but it's kind of irritating.

My only real beef with the software is I can't get the plug-in to work in Pro Tools reliably. It skips notes, etc. For this reason I use it stand-alone pretty much exclusively. close [-]
