Best thing since sliced bread

Best thing that could've happened to my studio It saves me so much time which is crucial to the creative process. I literally dont have to touch my mouse when using cubase or reason. the audio comes ... read more [+]in clean and clear with the onboard preamp. I paired it with an at4047 mic also a great product. I spent close to a year with little room for error as to how I had a budget doing research on what my studio would benefit the most from an after plenty of research it was either the profire 610 an a mackie control surface(more clutter and expensive) the 003 control surface(way over priced) or the mastercontrol(all the features of the other two/saves space and is actually portable if needed and most important saved me bucket full of cash) Long story short Its the best thing thats happened to my studio and I have never looked back close [-]

The Best Investment that I've made fore my setup in a while I think I might have bought the first unit back in December ,the day it started shipping. The motorized faders are ultra responsive and accu... read more [+]rate. The d/a converter is clean. It has Talk back Mic, 5.1 Surround output or 3 sets of stereo a,b,and c . all assignable buy buttons on the interface. Its a standalone Mixer with like 26 channels of input ADAT optical coaxial spif. See if you find that on any unit out for that price. If you own a Modest to professional home studio This is the move to integrate all your hardware pieces as well as controlling hands down most of any DAW and production software out there. I use it with Live and Cubase without a hitch. The only thing I could say that should improve is the Mic pre's are Good
but the gain trim knobs should be as good as everything else on the unit. Worth every penny and then some plus you get a two years service agreement for free from Sweetwater. you cant beat that with a stick. Oh yeah Alesis support was extremely helpful and knowledgeable I actually was the first person to ever call in for support on the Mastercontrol. I talked with one of the the Techs that lead R/D on the the unit so it was quick and informative. Seriously I don't work for anyone That sells or makes this product , I,ve been making music for years enough to know that Alesis is ahead of the game with the Mastercontrol. So if you scratching your head trying to decide what piece to go with I hope this helps. close [-]

Wonderful

by Scott Barnes from Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Music Background: Done some Live Sound Mixing, A little Recording, and some Post Sound Mixing. A little of everything a master of nothing.
Quick Highlights:

In use for about three weeks now.
I love this interface so far.

Positive -
1. Easy to install and configure.
2. Works flaw... read more [+]lessly as a core audio interface.
3. Has a robust feel and appears to be very sturdy in construction.
4. Lots of inputs
5. Fairly clean sound little to no noise depending on gain level.
6. Works great with OSX 10.5 have only tested it on a PPC machine but assume that it would work just as well on an Intel Mac.

Cons -
Channel 1&2(xlr)- The analog gain controls are very small and incredibly sensitive and hard to reach so if you are changing mics frequently it could get irritating to set your levels.

With our mics we have to turn the gain up pretty high to get a signal so a little noise is introduced but nothing that interfered with recording.

Wish that it could recognize what program was in use and change configuration to match.

Full review:
This is the first control surface that our organization has ever had, so we are still learning the full capabilities of what can be done with it. But in terms of basics it was almost just plug and play. Follow a few steps to configure each program and away we go. Of course Sweetwater was great. In helping with research for the device. We are an all Mac Lab that caters to Students working with all forms of digital media. We have a small audio room that the students can use to do there recording. Our major concern was how well it played with Mac. We have had trouble with brands and interfaces that claim Mac support but come up lacking. One of our concerns was we have lots of students that work with numerous programs and we need to make sure the interface worked with all of them and gave consistent sound between them. Well So far this Thing has worked wonders for GB, Logic, Soundtrack and Reason. Also SoundStudio and Audacity didn't have any trouble accepting input. So far there have been no problems that can be directly traced to the Master control. We do have one symptom that didn't happen till we started using the Master Control but cant rule out other causes. That is that if you open All the programs that you use the master control the computer kind of slows down to an unusable speed and stays that way until a restart. But it happens so infrequently its not a problem for us. I mean everyone needs to be turned off and on, every now and again even computers.

I would suggest this to anyone one. Especially if they are looking for an entry to professional level control system. We see lots of room for scalability as well and have started looking at ways we can expand with this as our centerpiece.

The only question left is longevity. Unfortunately I can't let you know anything about that until some time passes. We took a gamble on this device and so far have not been disappointed. If that changes you guys will be the first to know. close [-]

Bummed

The MasterControl looked like a perfect piece of gear for my studio. I got it set up and running, and it looked like all was good. However, I quickly realized that the Channel 4 fader was not operat... read more [+]ing right. So, I took it back and Sweetwater quickly hooked me up with another unit. Thankfully, Channel 4 worked. However, this MC (as well as the previous one) would produce a loud pop in my nice monitors everytime Windows did something or anytime I'd fire up my recording or editing software. I also had some crashes while trying to record. I messed with the latency settings, but it wasn't the solution. With an important recording session coming up, I decided I had to bail on the MC. I returned it for good and picked up the new TC Electronic Impact Twin - which has been an awesome interface - and the Presonus Faderport for automation.

To sum up, the MC has a lot of functionality and could be a great piece of gear if Alesis could make some stellar drivers as well as firmware improvements. But, I just couldn't trust it when it came down to crunch time. Unfortunately, I can't recommend it. close [-]
