If you're not prepared to spend $1K or more on a very high-end channel strip, but you really want a nice front end for your vocals and/or instruments, the Drawmer MXPro 60 Front End One should be a strong consideration. It has a good mic preamp, a very useful and musical compressor, de-esser, and EQ. Being able to dial in tube drive at various EQ levels helps deliver "sparkle" or "magic" to a vocal, guitar, or bass.
