Vintage Groove Tubes Sound!

No one knows tubes like Groove Tubes, and the stellar MD1b Tube - a reissue of their first tube mic - is living proof. The MD1b Tube is a classic cardioid vocal mic with a non-disk capsule design that imparts a vintage sound to your recordings. At the heart of the MD1b Tube's Class A tube electronics is a JAN spec GT6205M-USA tube. An auto load-compensating PSM power supply allows for extended cable runs exceeding 200 feet, for maximum studio flexibility.

The coupling of Groove Tubes' largest condenser capsule and its ultra-thin 3 micron Gold evaporated Mylar diaphragm with the Groove Tubes legendary low noise GT6205M tube in a Class A triode circuit design provides warmth with detail, adding new depth to vocal or instrument recording. The Class A tube electronics are centered around a hand-selected low noise USA-made vacuum tube. The MD1b Tube is powered by an auto load-compensating PSM Power Supply for extended cable runs, and the included cable is a 25' custom multicore low-capacitance, low noise mic cable with Neutrik connectors.

Great Vocal and Acoustic Guitar Mic

by Matt from Riverdale, UT USA

This is a great mic! I have a factory matched pair (I believe they still do those) and the mic is exceptional on acoustic guitar and many vocals. It's also done great on overheads and stereo cello.... read more [+] />
The thing about is it's just a bit dirty - in the best possible way. Just a little larger than life, and a little shinier. There's a great top end that can be clear and bitey, but not harsh at all. The bottom end is a bit enhanced. It's just a mic that makes you say "Sweet!"

I do wish they made it clearer which is front and which is back. Whenever I've had an intern set them up for the first time, they have it so the cool GT cutout is facing the performer. That is, unfortunately, backwards. The holes go in the front. The mic can also get a bit of grit on loud sources (like it's overdriving).

I also have an original, larger Model 1 that the Model 1B was patterned after. GT did a great job with the Model 1B. It's a tube microphone that really exemplifies what a tube mic should sound like. Flavored. close [-]

Sweetwater Advice

Carson McClain
When looking for a tube mic several things come in to play such as price, quality, and brand recognition. Groove Tubes MD1B covers all of these bases. If this microphone was twice the price it would still be worth it. I sell a lot of Groove Tubes gear, and this is one of my favorite microphones from them.
