From Our Research Team:

The Best Version of Live Yet!

Live has been a favorite of electronica and remix artists for both stage and studio work, and Ableton has been building towards attracting a wider audience. The latest version, Live 6, may be the biggest upgrade in its history, opening the doors for a much wider group of users to take advantage of its creative power. Live 6 boasts several performance-boosting features that allow Live to integrate seamlessly into a variety of music production and post-production tasks.

Ableton Live 6 At a Glance:
  • QuickTime Support
  • Support for Multiple and Multi-core Processors
  • New Essential Instrument Collection
  • Improved Processing Tools

QuickTime Support
Arguably the biggest new feature in Live 6 is the ability to import QuickTime files into Live sessions with drag-and-drop ease. The audio portion of the clip can be processed like you’d process any other audio file. Support for video has been one of the most requested features, and its realization opens Live up for broader use by film scorers and commercial composers.

Support for Multiple and Multi-core Processors
Live was one of the first to jump feet-first into the Universal Binary platform, and Live 6 takes it a step further. Now users with multiple processors and multiple-core processors will experience a dramatic increase in performance. In Live 5, Ableton introduced Clip Freeze, which creates and plays back sample files for all clips in the track, preserving CPU. New in Live 6, Deep Freeze expands the Clip Freeze function by allowing you to edit, copy, paste, duplicate, cut, and trim sections, as well as add automation. Deep Freeze will also render virtual instrument tracks into audio tracks.

New Essential Instrument Collection
The boxed version of Live 6 adds a new Essential Instrument Collection. This assortment of new instruments covers everything from classic pianos to plucked instruments to simulated choirs. The multi-gigabyte library of sounds is from the SONiVOX (formerly Sonic Implants) premium collections and integrates seamlessly into Live 6 using the included Simpler instrument. On the creation side of things, Live 6 also boasts instrument and Rack effects for tweaking sounds. There are very few limitations when working within a Rack - you can have parallel device chains, VST/AU plug-ins, and even other Racks. Any number of effects, plug-ins, Racks, or instruments can be utilized inside a single Rack. To get you started, Ableton included several preset Rack configurations ranging from synthesis to mastering. Your favorite custom settings can be easily saved with drag-and-drop ease.

Improved Processing Tools
Finally, Live 6 brings improved processing tools to the table. EQ Eight doubles the number of previously available EQ bands and leans more toward a professional studio than its predecessor. Dynamic Tube mimics vintage tube distortion and also lets you create your own tube-flavored distortion. Saturator has been upgraded to include a user-defined waveshaper, and you can create custom distortion sounds. No matter how hard you push the Saturator, the second saturator stage prevents the signal from peaking higher than 0dB.

  • Multi-core and Multiprocessor support

Waking the world

by Miquiel Banks from Palm Harbor, Florida

Music Background: Rapper, Poet, and Professional Electronic Musician
There's so many DAWs out there, how do you decide which one to use? Yeah, listen to your geeky cheap friends and pirate copies of Fl Studio and Reason. However, you will get sick of trying to live off... read more [+] Snickers bars, yeah it tastes good, but doesn't satisfy! So you're off to Cubase, Sonar, Pro Tools, and whatever's out there, but you'll never eat right. Your soul will never be quenched and you'll never taste the truth again. Unless you grow up and awaken the sleeper within. And that can only be done with Ableton Live. The name says it all, this software is ALIVE! It comes to you in software form, but from then on, it's up to you to find your bliss. It is a tapestry of tools that provides you with the canvas to paint your musical masterpieces. Are you able and up for the challenge? Are you dead or alive? Can you stop being a Dead Simpleton and get ABLETON LIVE? And if you think this is propaganda, let's get to the facts. What software won BEST DAW for 2007? If you don't know, then you're just cycling back in 74, but that's another story.... close [-]

It does everything.

Able ton does everything you need it to and more. It is incredibly efficient at everything. My favorite thingis that you can freeze tracks to save processor space, instantly convert it to a flat audio... read more [+] file and then slap more effects on it, freeze and repeat. In minutes you you can turn a basic little loop into incredibly complex waveforms and stage by stage throw a copy aside for endless variations. Another favorite thing is recording/ programming in midi is the easiest out of any program I've used. You can record with or without automatic quantization, and then arrow key your notes around later, snapping to whatever time structure you want. It truly does everything from beginning to end. Studio to performance. Creation to mastery. You won't be disappointed. close [-]

Ableton is all it is hyped up to be

by Paulie from NJ
April 21, 2007
Music Background: Producer & DJ
As a former DJ who has used Cubase VST 5 and later Sonar 3, all I can say is Live 6 is exactly what I was looking for. While other DAW programs for PC are certainly more powerful than a few years ago,... read more [+] they all suffer from being way too complicated & deep. Some musicians may need total and utter control over MIDI and audio, but are overly bloated with features I will never use. Live is meant for guys & gals who are more interested in making music than learning new programs - which is great.

The audio quality is great, the control over midi (at least soft synths) is very good, and it takes advantage of multi core CPUs. Since I haven't hooked my USB midi controller into Live 6, I cannot comment on how it controls hardware MIDI. I do appreciate & like all the audio & midi effects that they included in version 6, plus the support for QT video.

The one thing that threw me off right in the beginning is how different the controls are compared to all the other DAW software out there. However, I can now see why Ableton gave Live the different ways of controlling the program now - much easier than Sonar or Cubase for most tasks. close [-]

The Best Workflow of Any DAW

by Joe from Raleigh, NC
November 2, 2006
Music Background: Synthesist/Composer
I've used a handful of sequencers on the Mac from 1984: Total Music, MIDIPaint, Performer, Vision, Studio Vision, Digital Performer and Logic (Express) before I stumbled across Live 5.2. Before Live I... read more [+] compared everything to MIDIPaint...it worked in loops...it was intuitive...it was fast...it didn't get in the way...every other sequencer I worked with (especially in the past 5 years when they started to bloat) was always too complex and took too long to learn. When I downloaded the Ableton Live 5.2 demo I was up and running in minutes and discovered a new creative energy that I hadn't had in years. I was amazed at how a piece of software could be transparent yet so powerful. Needless to say I bought 5.2 from Sweetwater and got the free update to 6 when it came out and have stopped using everything else. Ableton Live is not just for DJs - it's for serious musicians who want to get some real work done without fighting with their software. close [-]

The Standard for electronic music

by Denfert-Rochereau from Seoul, Korea
January 8, 2007
Music Background: Electronic Dance Music Producer/Remixer, DJ.
Ableton Live is probably one of the most important developments in the electronic music production world. In my own DJ work, I'll use it to slice up tracks or more importantly elongate breaks in certa... read more [+]in songs, which is useful in a live setting when building the crowd into a frenzy. As far as actual production, the program is outstanding. The arrangement and session views work very well in concert with each other. The internal soundset included is decent for starters, but don't buy Abelton for it's built-in sounds. Buy it as a versatile tool for both live DJ applications and track production. It's killer fun too! close [-]
