ReviewsThe LowDown on the Baritone
by Scott from Cleveland
Impressive! Let me qualify this a bit by stating I own 13 Gibsons. 5 Historic's , some Gibson USA models, and a couple of Norlin vintage special editions. A long with a Fender SubSonic Strat. Curren... read more [+]tly own 30 guitars and have had or restored another 30 or so. So I'm pretty well versed in Gibson quality over the years and its not my first Baritone guitar. I'm mostly into Blues and Classic rock but enjoy Alt and heavier sounding new rock too.August 23, 2011 Music Background: Live sound, Engineering, Playing since the 80's Fit and Finish. You know, I can't find a single flaw on this guitar. The finish is perfect. The frets and nut are perfect too due to the Plek systems machine work. The out of the box playability was excellent. I did lower the bridge pickup slightly since it was a hair to high but this is the type of thing that directly relates to your amp and gain levels and isn't a set up issue in my opinion. Construction. Mine was just how you want it. A nice slab of straight grained dense mahogany for the neck and a lighter more resonant chunk of mahogany for the body. Interestingly enough for a 28 inch scale guitar it's balanced beautifully. The area where the neck meets the body is the balance point. In my opinion it's better balanced than a regular LP. I didn't weigh it but would classify it as a heavier medium weight guitar. I've seen Les Paul's that where a LOT heavier. Mine rang out great acoustically also which is a good sign. Compared to my Fender SubSonic Strat... Well there is no comparison. The Gibson steals the Fenders lunch money and leaves it crying at the bus stop. As far as tone and playability goes the Gibson has the Fender beat. Hands Down. Electronics. The pickups are 500T and 496R at the Bridge and Neck. Being a vintage PAF oriented guy I was worried that the HOT Ceramic pickups would be a bit to hot for my rig. Not to fear they really sound great in this ax with its lower voicing. Plenty of punch and grind and while there is a good amount of highs its not excessively bright. The 300K volume pots are probably taming the treble a bit compared to 500K pots. The tone pots are 500K and have a great usable sweep. Backing off on the volume controls cause the sound to clean up beautifully. No mud here. Also these pickups are LOUD...... EMG loud. Think about 150% hotter than a hot PAF loud. This all works to give it a definite growl which is a good thing in a Baritone and strong clean sounds. Its also very quiet. The pickups work great with heavier rock sounds and rolling the volume back gives you a robust clean sound. Unlike some of the newer LP Standard's I have seen these still use the older method of mounting the pots to a steel plate in the control cavity as opposed to the newer method of mounting the pots to a prewired circuit board. So tweaking pots and caps and pickups in this would be a breeze for all the tweaker's. Gibson made a good choice's with the electronics. This is a no nonsense guitar that rocks a LOT heaver than a regular Gibson yet still cleans up enough to be versatile. Chances are if your reading this you already know what these guitars are all about. Hopefully my self indulgent review helps a few of you make up your minds. I have been wanting one of these since the initial batch sold out back in 2005. I am 115% satisfied with this guitar. As a LP Standard type of guy I would loved to have seen these with crown inlays, and neck and body binding but that would have added to the price. Which is pretty reasonable.
