Celebrating 50 years of the Les Paul Standard! Limited to just 200 instruments worldwide, the Gibson 50th Anniversary 1958 Les Paul Standard celebrates the birth of the Les Paul Standard, arguably the most popular Les Paul ever built. This beauty is constructed from a mahogany back with a carved, figured maple top sporting a washed cherry Murphy-aged finish and single-ply cream binding. The long tenon mahogany neck is crowned with a rosewood fingerboard and sports a period-appropriate 1950s neck profile. Electronically, this Les Paul is loaded with Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups and CTS pots with bumble bee capacitors. Gibson 50th Anniversary 1958 Les Paul Standard at a Glance: 1958: A year of innovation Vintage appointments 1958: A year of innovation 1958 was a pivotal year for Gibson. The Explorer, Flying V, and ES-335 all first saw the light of day, as did the first non-Goldtop Les Paul, which is what this limited run Paul commemorates. When Gibson showed the world how smoothly traditional guitar craftsmanship could be applied to this bold new template with the first incarnation of the Les Paul - the Goldtop with P-90s and an unusual trapeze tailpiece (later a wraparound tailpiece) of 1952 - the results inspired equal measures of applause and mystification. The guitar won some converts, but was no runaway success. A quick succession of advances in the design - namely the addition of a tune-o-matic bridge in 1955, humbucking pickups in 1957 - culminated in the most sublime of cosmetic features, the Cherry Sunburst finish applied to a carved maple top, officially added for the first time as a standard production feature in 1958. The guitar forever after known as the Les Paul Standard was born. Then in the blink of an eye, just two years and less than 2,000 units later, it was gone. Capable of producing broad, expressive tones with ringing sustain and an unprecedented playability, it nevertheless caught the guitar world largely unprepared for its potential - until a new generation of British and American blues-rockers partnered it with powerful new amplifiers, cranked the knobs to 10, and roared with a voice previously unheard in rock and roll. The Les Paul Standard had already been with us for half a decade, but by the mid '60s it was finally here, and there was no looking back. Vintage appointments The 50th Anniversary Les Paul Standard is loaded with all the classic hardware and electronics like you'd expect to find on a fine vintage instrument. The top is a classic carved, figured maple top in a washed cherry finish on top of a solid mahogany back. To lend the look of a vintage instrument that's seen 50 years of loving use, this Les Paul is "Murphy Aged." The 1-piece mahogany neck with long neck tenon is also vintage-correct, as is the '50s-style rounded neck profile. For classic Les Paul tone, a pair of Burstbuckers provide amplification, with CTS pots and bumble bee capacitors for authenticity. Vintage tulip tuners reside in the holly veneer headstock, with trapezoid neck inlays and ABR-1 bridge and aluminum tailpiece rounding out the physical features.
