Flexible Dual-pattern Performance for Stage and Studio

When you need premium performance onstage or in the studio, look to the Shure KSM141. This end-address, small-diaphragm condenser microphone boasts a gold-layered, low-mass Mylar diaphragm for superior transient response, along with a transformerless preamplifier for super-transparent audio reproduction. The KSM141’s dual polar patterns offer amazing flexibility, while a built-in subsonic filter eliminates unwanted low-frequency rumble. A 3-position pad and 3-position highpass filter round out the KSM141’s impressive feature set. The KSM141 possesses the coveted trifecta of versatility, durability, and precision, making it an excellent choice for live and studio applications alike.

Superior build quality ensures top-shelf sound

Over 90 years of mic-building experience went into the KSM141’s design, and it shows. Its super-thin, 2.5-micrometer 24-karat gold-layered, low-mass Mylar diaphragm exhibits superior transient response, while its Class A, discrete, transformerless preamplifier yields incredible transparency, lightning-fast transient response, near-zero crossover distortion, and minimal harmonic and inter-modulation distortion. Premium electronic components, including gold-plated internal and external connectors, add to the KSM141’s superior build quality.

A secret sonic weapon with pro-level features

The Shure KSM141 is jam-packed with the pro-level features you’d expect from a microphone of this caliber. A mechanical polar pattern switch toggles between a highly consistent cardioid and true omnidirectional polar patterns, making this mic perfect for a myriad of applications. A built-in subsonic filter eliminates the sub-17Hz low-frequency rumble caused by mechanical vibration. You also get a 3-position pad (0dB, -15dB, and -2 dB) for handling high-SPL sources, plus a 3-position highpass filter switch for counteracting proximity effect and reducing stand vibration noise. At Sweetwater, we’ve found the KSM141 to be a top performer — a serious sleeper hit — on acoustic instruments like violins and mandolins, plus acoustic guitars and drum overheads. If you’re looking for a secret sonic weapon, the KSM141 definitely fits the bill.

Outstanding across the spectrum

I've never owned what I would call an expensive microphone before, let alone 2 of them. My most expensive mic was a stereo Sony mic I paid $150 for 5 years ago.

I've only been playing with these KSM141 mics for half a day now and I'm very impressed and pleased with them. Real true to life sound reproduction across the audio spectrum .. well almost. The lower frequencies seem a bit too bassy. But, I've decided to consider this an advantage because 1) I can low cut, high pass, and EQ adjust to reduce this issue when desired, and 2) these stronger lower frequency sounds will be an advantage in some situations too, such as recording bands playing in the park in the summer. I'll have to test them during the next thunderstorm, see how they handle that.

While experimenting with the mics I was fooled a few times while listening to my test recordings. I.E. I thought my cat was calling for me so I removed my headphones and went to see what he wanted. But he was asleep. The meow was in the earlier recording I was listening to.

I'm not an audio or musical professional. I have had music lessons long ago. I was in a band as a teen. I can play keyboard and guitar (lead and base). But my interest in audio and musical gear is strictly for fun, an enjoyable hobby. I have though created some music, strictly for my enjoyment. But right now I'm more interested in producing and recording soundscapes. I bought these mics (along with other gear from Sweetwater, like my Akai MPC X and Waldorf Kyra) to create soundscapes. Nature, wildlife, ambient, and musical soundscapes.

I recently moved out of the noisy cities and into the tranquil countryside in the middle of a large forest. It's filled with many wonderful wildlife and other nature sounds. I intend to take full advantage of these soundscape opportunities. And that's why I bought these mics.

The ability to switch between omnidirectional and cardioid patterns will be beneficial. Omni when I'm completely surround by wonderful sounds, cardioid when there might be highway sounds behind me a few miles away that needs to be reduced/eliminated. I may eventually add some shotgun mics too, maybe do some surround sound soundscapes. But one step at a time.

Oh .. there is one curiosity about these mics. There's one spot on the mic where if I touch my finger there I'll hear a noticeable hum in the audio. It's not subtle either. It's clearly heard. If I ground myself to the mixer/recorder I'm using while touching this spot, the hum is very minimal. The spot is at the attenuator switch. I'm not sure what the problem is, and whether it can be corrected. In any case, I don't intend to be using these in my hands, so it's a none issue. I will troubleshoot this when time permits. It could be the mic, or the recorder, or the cable. I'll figure that out later. It's not really an issue at this point.

BTW, the stereo mic adapter is a great inclusion in this set. It fits well on my heavy duty Manfrotto camera tripod.

Also, I'll probably be using these mostly outside. I am hoping they'll hold up well on warm/hot humid Minnesota summer day. I won't be using them as much as professional music performers would. But I am more concerned about leaving them enclosed in the included case with all that (petroleum based?) foam padding. That stuff can degrade over the years and emit damaging gases. And the case can entrap moisture itself too. I've had electronics destroyed this way in similar cases over a span of twenty+ years. So, I'm not a huge fan of that case. I'll find a wood box and use some cotton clothes to pad it with during transport.

Great and Versatile

I love these mics. For the past 6 months or so we have been using these as choir overhead mics. Sometimes we have an orchestra behind these mics, and we are fortunate to have one. With limited space, I'm able to select the Omni pattern and pick up both orchestra, and good annunciation of the choir still since we mic them close enough. With a nice neutral, but slightly bright presence, these mics do well on choir and drum overheads, as well as mic'ing the fretboard of a guitar and other instruments. Overall, these are a great workhorse to keep in your microphone tool box. Highly recommend!

Usefull tools

I've had these mics for a little over a year, and use them mainly for drum overheads and acoustic guitar. They handle both jobs amazingly. This pair were my first SDC mics, and I must say if you are just starting out you can't go wrong with these mics. FWIW I personally don't find myself using omni mode on these very often.

What Do Our In-house Gear Experts Think?

Sam Hillman

The Shure KSM141 mics are my go-to pair of small diaphragms - both in my studio and on location. Their mechanical pattern switching is innovative and unique. Usually pencil condenser mics have separate capsules that cost extra, but with the KSM141 it's like having two completely different mics in one! The cardioid pattern is tight and “laser-like” which ensures great imaging in XY or AB recordings such as drum overheads. The KSM141s in Omni are my favorite for stereo recordings of choirs and orchestras because there is no bass roll-off at a distance, and when used with a Jecklin/Schneider disc baffle technique it always sounds natural, detailed, and accurate; like you are in the audience hearing it live!
