The versatile little Shure KSM137This is my third purchase of pairs of Shure KSM137s. By far the most versatile mic I've ever owned. It's great for extreme X-Y recording, and the new bracket is amazing. And separately, I use them for just about everything: violins, violas, acoustic guitar, percussion, harp, xylophone, vibes and marimba, congas, overheads and hihat.
With the wide frequency and dynamic range, they can do just about anything, with no distortion and a crisp clean high end. I do a lot of live and studio work. On a club gig, they didn't have a suitable kick drum mic. I gave it a try. The subwoofers really got a workout. I even use it with a good windscreen for voiceover work. With the 137's tight pattern, it gets the job done when in a less than ideal studio atmosphere.
