ReviewsIncredibly Versatile!

Got a great deal on a "Demo" model from here just over a month ago. It does have a ding on one corner and the owner's manual was pretty well mangled, but otherwise in near perfect shape. I got away fr... read more [+]om Roland for a quite a few years after retiring a U-20, but I am glad to be back! It all feels very familiar, had no trouble jumping into playing and programming. There might be a learning curve if you haven't used Roland boards before. I'm still filling out the Favorites banks for easy access at gigs. Used it twice live and got positive feedback from bandmates about the sounds. I was considering buying a Nord after playing a friends new one, but I chose the Juno-Stage because it does so much more. And for my taste the quality of the sounds the Nord is known for are just as good (for a better price). It's the first synth I've owned that nails the Wurlitzer elec. piano sound (and has a variety of them with the expansion cards I added). I like the organ sounds so much I thought about not taking my Korg CX-3 to the gigs, but do to be able to easily play two sounds at once, or just go back and forth between organ and other sounds without pressing buttons. January 6, 2010 Music Background: 40+ years Pro Keyboards, vocals, recording Some may not like the key action as it is not really piano like, but being an organist since the 60s I like it. I find a weighted action to be fatiguing in a 4 hour gig. The jacks for and iPod, USB drive, and microphone have all proved useful for running everything into one input. I use a Simmons stereo drum amp that only has one set of stereo inputs. I'm learning more each time I sit down to play, but I think I'll probably be playing this board for as long as the 20+ years I played my last Roland board! close [-] outstanding

October 4, 2008 Music Background: Pro Christian musician Great Keyboard
by Anthony Tsung from Toronto, Canada
I love this keyboard. It is loaded with sounds. A lot of the sounds are useless to me but the main sounds such as acoustic pianos, electric pianos, wurlitzlers, organs, clavs, orchestral sounds are ... read more [+]really nice. Some presets are weak like their 88 grand piano and the wurlitzlers but it has a huge and a bit complicated effects processor section and with a bit of adjusting, the grand piano comes out beautifully and the wurly has that awesome fuzz sound behind it. Very impressed. As far as synth sounds, there are tons. Some of them are really impressive, some are like they could of left it out. No after touch though. The keyboard is easy to use. Looks great. Yes no sequencer but we all use software anyways but it does have a 16 track midi-sequencer.October 21, 2009 Music Background: Don't forget the vocoder, haven't tried, will soon. Highly recommend it. close [-] A gigging machine

My band plays mostly 70's and 80's classic rock (keyboard based). Tons of onboard sounds, great effects. I had hoped the "Grand Piano" would blow my head off right out of the box, but to me it lacks definition, one can't hit the keys hard enough to hear the hammer hitting the strings like a real piano. Most of the sounds are good, but not as BIG and FAT as I've come to expect from the vintage Roland stuff I already own. Most sounds come off kind of flat and one-dimensional not punchy like vintage Roland. As a master MIDI controller, it seems as if Roland kind of threw in MIDI as an afterthought; like a spare tire on a car. Only ten MIDI program changes? And, only on one channel? I did finally figure out how to send on multiple MIDI channels, but I can't get this machine to send things like PROGRAM CHANGES and VOLUME to my old rack-mount stuff. Couldn't figure out how to do it; calling Roland wasn't any help at all. No MIDI thru jack?? Really? On the plus side: the keyboard action is VERY nice and responsive. MIDI notwithstanding this board does TONS of stuff that I'm still delving into, provided one has the time to tweak the sounds and effects. It's probably as good a board as anything else out there at this price point, but as a master MIDI keyboard I feel Roland missed the mark. close [-] Roland JUNO-STAGE
